Stunning coastal walks

  • Spectacular views over St Mawes and Falmouth bay
  • Five minutes’ drive to beach with: water-sports, kayak hire and more
  • Beautiful scenic woodland walks on our door step
If wind-swept coastal walks with your four-legged friend are your jam, pack your hiking boots (and the lead) and head to Trewen Farm Campsite, a peaceful spot where you can set up on a vast grassy area with spectacular views of the sea. Things feel blissfully remote here, but you’re only half a mile from the nearest village – Budock Water – so when you fancy a pint or you need to stock up on barbecue essentials, you don’t have far to go. For more restaurant options, head to lively Falmouth (10 minutes; or take the bus, which runs a regular service from Budock Water). Woodland trails cross the farm and link to a wider network of walks in the surrounding area, including the South West Coastal Path, which takes you past rugged cliffs and dramatic seascapes to lookouts like Stack Point (50 minutes on foot) and beaches like Swanpool (one hour on foot), a stretch of sand and shingle with kayak and paddleboard hire, plus a miniature golf course. There are also trails in Carwinion Woods (10 minutes), which is a riot of colourful wildflowers in the spring, and a circular walk along the shores of Argal Reservoir (15 minutes), where you might indulge in a spot of birdwatching or fishing (be sure to get a permit for this). If this is all too tame for you, get your adrenaline going at Via Ferrata Cornwall (15 minutes), with multiple routes up granite cliffs.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: The site was so peaceful with stunning views. I had the most amazing view of sunset and the sunrise. Was beautiful. Close enough to walk into Falmouth (but hilly)

Disliked: Facilities were fine for me but are basic if you are used to some sites

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: Pitch was provided with an excellent view of the Falmouth coast. With it being a Wednesday it was super quiet. Good recycling system.

Disliked: Both male and female showers did not work. Both were freezing - not acceptable. Should be a basic necessity of a ‘campsite’. Showers filled with spiders. No reply till early morning regarding cold showers. Toilet door locks didn’t work. Basic needs neglected. Do not come if you want to risk having no facilities

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: We had a lovely stay, it was peaceful and the most beautiful view to wake up to. I wish I could see the sea every day when I wake up. Lots of space and a good location, definitely try the local pub which is 15 minute walk away. We even saw a hedgehog.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked: The location in budock water is great for walking into falmouth, about 2ish miles, Great local shop and pub, bus links to local places if you'd rather not walk. The site had good electric on pitches along the hedge line and a very good sea view. This site is a bit rough around the edges but very normal for cornwall, due to the location and and price we will visit again. The toilets were clean and working and well stocked.

Disliked: The outdoor water point / tap was not working so it was a struggle to fill up water carriers from sink taps. The males showers where stone cold and the female showers where luke warn and like a dribble.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: Location and view

Disliked: Showers were cold and didn’t heat up at all which wasn’t great at all for the whole week! Which was a big factor of me choosing this site in the first place for it having showers.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: The campsite is in a good location to visit Falmouth and surrounding sites including Pendennis Castle which we loved. The field itself is well maintained, and the loos were nice and clean. There were good views, although from the description we had expected to be closer to the sea and its actually quite a way away. Easy access to local pubs etc... is good too. Good value for money as it wasn't expensive and all of the essentials (minus decent working showers- see below) we're there.

Disliked: The showers weren't working properly and seemed to have no hot water both days we were there. Then on the last day there was no water at all which wasn't ideal. As I said above, the site description made it sound like the sea views were a bit more close by so even though the views were nice that was a bit of an initial disappointment on arrival. On balance, whilst it was a good enough site it didn't feel as loved as other sites we have been to locally.

Local attractions

The National Maritime Museum Cornwall, overlooking the harbour in Falmouth, displays among other things a collection of small boats from all around the world – from dinghies and lifeboats, to outrigger canoes. Medieval jousts take place throughout the summer at Pendennis Castle, built by Henry VIII on a rocky headland. Green-fingered visitors make a beeline for splendid green hubs such as Trebah Garden and National Trust Glendurgan Garden (both 10 minutes’ drive). The latter spreads across three valleys and has a cherry laurel maze planted almost two centuries ago (1833). Trebah is renowned for its collections of rhododendrons and camellias. Thrill rides at Flambards Theme Park (25 minutes) include the vertiginous Skyraker drop tower, but there are also gentler, more child-friendly attractions, such as a traditional carousel and a miniature western mine train, plus indoor themed areas like the Victorian Village.
