  • Cornwall site with adjacent equestrian centre for lessons and hacks
  • Lake on site with valley views
  • Peaceful family farm site with plenty of room for play
Why the long face? Because you didn't canter to Camelford for a Cornwall holiday surrounded by all things horse? Neigh problem: race to Lakefield Caravan Park to remedy. A quiet farm park on the north Cornwall coast close to Camelford, Lakefield has its own British Horse School and Riding for the Disabled Association-approved equestrian centre attached, with classes and rides for all ages and abilities from beginner to experienced. Your horse-mad little person can even trot along to a Saturday pony club or have a pony-owning experience day… Other winning features on site are the stargazing – when it's dark here, it's really dark, points out the Lakefield team; the quiet, secluded setting (no bars or clubs here) and the handy location: although it's secludedly set, Lakefield's on a B road so is an excellent base for galloping all over Cornwall. Kids – and dogs – can roam with impunity around the big field for off-lead exercise (for dogs, not kids) and the big grassy area set aside for ball games, handily within eyeballing sight of most pitches. The whole site covers five acres, with lake and valley views on a 54-acre smallholding. All pitches at Lakefield are grass and well-spaced. The well-maintained amenities block has free hot showers, free hot water, a washing machine and a tumble dryer. The medieval market town of Camelford is a mile away and has shops and a leisure centre with indoor pool.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Nice and quiet basic site, plenty of room for kids to wonder around and pitches are really big.

Disliked: Nothing really but shower block could be a little bigger and maybe have a family room or two. Was ok for our stay but if it was fully booked think you would have to wait a while to have a shower or go the toilet. Overall good site for a fair price.

Liked: Absolutely wonderful pitches, good size to fit our jumbo tent on (Outdoor Revolution Safari 6XTR) with room to spare. Benches dotted about is a lovely addition too. Lovely big grass area for the kids to play and a completely secure site. Toilets and showers super clean, hot water and great showers. Stunning views and a great all round site for visiting North Cornwall

Disliked: Nothing!

Liked: This was such a friendly camping field. When we were pitching up we had a problem with our electric but this was resolved very fast from great service from site. was a lovely stay great place to wash up plates and had washing machines if needed. the showers where amazing always warm and powerful. plenty of toilets aswell. Plenty of adventure walks around easy drive too. we went to the hidden valley which was beautiful and tintagel castle which was amazing views and a 10 minute drive.

Disliked: When we were pitching up our tent into the grass not far under there was a very hard ground so had to put in more sideways as wouldn’t go down.

Local attractions

Ramble over moors or surf over waves from Lakefield Caravan Park: both Bodmin Moor and the sandy beaches of north Cornwall are close by. At Bodmin, take a walk around Rough Tor and Brown Willy, Cornwall's two highest points among its best-known landmarks; at the coast, the strong waves of nearby Trebarwith Strand are eminently suitable for surfing – and the 800 metre-long sands a top pick for sunbathing. On land, the Camel Trail, 11 miles away, is a good ride for families and has cycle hire in several spots. Popular Cornish day trips are within driving distance at Boscastle (five miles), Port Isaac (10 miles) and Padstow (19 miles). This is legendary country too, with the castle and village of King Arthur's Tintagel, six miles along the coast, now one of the most visited attractions in the land. It gets quite madly busy at Tintagel in summer, so for a less crowded experience, visit the Arthurian Centre at Slaughterbridge, a mile and a half from the site just outside Camelford. For those who fancy fishing, Crowdy Reservoir – a couple of miles from Lakefield – has free coarse fishing for Environment Agency rod licence holders from March to October.
