  • North Cornwall pop-up campsite on a family-run smallholding
  • Two miles from Crackington Haven beach; Bude 15 minutes
  • Quiet setting, with farm animals and a lake
Located in a peaceful north Cornwall location, Haven Lake Farm has a name that really says it all. This place is indeed a 'haven' for wildlife, families and anyone who loves cute farm animals – of which there are a fair few wandering about. 'Lake' because – you've guessed it – there's a large body of water close to the spacious pitches, meaning lots of the site has simply stunning views. And 'farm' because this is a working family-run smallholding, allowing you to get a real taste of rural life as well as a relaxing holiday. Think fresh eggs straight from the hens, homemade jams or firewood sourced from the site's own trees. Portaloos and showers are available here, and dogs and barbecues are allowed too (there's a dedicated area for the latter, complete with handy picnic benches). Haven Lake Farm is five minutes' drive from the small village of Crackington Haven, where there's access to the beach and plenty of coastal footpaths to explore. A small village shop is available too, while larger stores, pubs and supermarkets are a quarter of an hour's drive up the road in Bude, a pretty seaside town. In Poundstock (10 minutes) , just south of Bude, there's also a cinema if you fancy some indoor entertainment after days exploring the countryside.

Primitive grass tent campsite (large)

Liked: Rachel and Jamie were very welcoming. It was super windy overnight when we visited and Jamie and Rachel popped to check on the field regularly. Nothing was too much trouble. Wonderful spot, with plenty of space to pitch where you like. Short walk to the lake where you can take a picnic or have a BBQ. Basic toilets and washing up sink but just how we like it. Proper wild camping. We will definitely be back ! Amenities close by, with a lovely beach down the road. Thank you!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The place is a beautiful retreat. The field is well-maintained and there is a fantastic picnic spot near the lake, a short walk from the main campsite, where there is a picnic table and place for a barbecue. The facilities are very basic – with chemical loos – but we enjoyed the simplicity and calmness of the location. Rachel and Jamie are very welcoming and the menagerie of animals – goats, sheep, dogs, cats etc. were very friendly too!

Disliked: The locks on the loo could do with looking at, as they do not close correctly.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely site. Level, easy pitching. Beautiful lake area. Friendly, relaxed hosts. Basic amenities, but nice and clean. 5 min drive from stunning beach. Easy to get to Widemouth Bay and Bude too. Not max marks for amenities, but it's advertised as wild camping, so it's actually v good for that. Wi-fi reception patchy on pitches, but fine 100m up, by the entrance.

Local attractions

Bude (15 minutes' drive) is an award-winning coastal resort with several separate beaches that are great for swimming, paddling or just barefoot strolling in the sand. There are also plenty of opportunities to try surfing here at well-established local watersports schools, as well as more niche sports like coasteering (if you're feeling brave enough). After touring the coast for a while, the town also has good leisure amenities to take advantage of, including a bowling alley. To the south, Tintagel (20 minutes) is a must-see for all things King Arthur. Reputed to be the legendary ruler's birthplace, this pretty village has a well-preserved medieval castle, coastal caves, museums and lots of independent shops and cafés. All in all, it makes an excellent day out, whether you're here for the history, the views, the food… or a mix of all three. North Cornwall is walking country too. You're just a couple of miles from the South West Coast Path here, as well as other gorgeous spots likes Rough Tor (30 minutes) for views over Bodmin Moor, the Crowdy Reservoir (15 minutes) for peaceful waterside strolls and St Nectan's Glen (15 minutes), a forest stream and waterfall hidden in a valley just outside Tintagel.
