  • Peaceful family-oriented campsite on a farm with South Downs views
  • A 15-minute drive to Worthing; 10 minutes’ walk to the South Downs Way
  • No-frills pitches with outdoor showers; fires allowed in firepits
Many campsites are in historic spots, but Chanctonbury View Wild Camping at Gallops Farm takes some beating, with no-frills spacious pitches looking out over the ancient landscapes of South Downs National Park. Here, you’re only a 50-minute walk from the Bronze Age barrows at Chanctonbury and Cissbury rings, and it’s a great overnight pitstop for long-distance hikers and cyclists too, as it's a 10-minute walk to the nearest sections of the Monarch’s Way and South Downs Way. At this family-run working farm, the fields are full of grazing cows and you’ll soon be firm friends with the pigs and cheeky hens. Conservation plots are dotted around the place too, so it’s a haven for wildlife, and quiet guests may spot deer, hares, buzzards and the resident barn owl. The site is a 20-minute walk from the village of Findon, which has a handful of pubs, an Indian restaurant, a butcher and village shop where you can load up with supplies for the barbecue. A round-up of facilities at this back-to-basics site here includes portable toilets, standing water taps for doing the washing up and basic gas-powered showers hooked up in the trees, so you can get right back to nature and shower in the open air. Pitches are well spaced and campfires are allowed, but only in firepits, please – a few are available for hire (subject to availability) and kindling is for sale on site too.

Local attractions

Jump in the car and take the family to Worthing (15 minutes’ drive) for a day paddling in the sea, eating ice cream and walking along the pier. Splashpoint Leisure Centre on the seafront has a fantastic indoor swimming pool with slides (perfect for any rainy days), and Gull Island Playground has plenty of sand and a big grassy slope for kids to roll down. Other surefire hits with the kids include the petting farm and themed rides at the Hello Kitty Secret Garden in Drusillas Park (45 minutes), while Out of Bounds (20 minutes) has rope trails as well as soft play areas for younger children. For more sedate days out, Arundel (20 minutes) is a buzzy little market town with a Norman castle and surprisingly enormous cathedral to explore, as well as farmers’ markets (third Saturday every month) and lots of arts and music festivals in the summer months.
