  • Spacious, dog-friendly farm park far from busy roads
  • A 15-minute drive from Shoreham-by-Sea beach; Brighton 30 minutes
  • Direct river access; on-site kayak, canoe and paddleboard hire
If the idea of a farm with green fields, river Adur access and South Downs views has you hooked, you'd best get your paws on a plot at New Wharf Campsite, a spacious, pet-friendly spot 15 minutes' drive from Shoreham-by-Sea. This place gets top marks for location: being slap-bang in the middle of West Sussex means London can be reached in roughly an hour, with Brighton's bohemian shops and restaurants a straightforward 30-minute drive away. Not forgetting, of course, all the green and goodly spots to be found in between… Another perk of staying here? Private access to the rather scenic river Adur, a splendid watercourse that's a short walk from the main site. Here you can hire a variety of riverworthy craft, including kayaks, canoes and paddleboards. Wild swims are also an option (this is a tidal river, so you'd do well to check the water level before diving in). Back on land there's a clearing in the middle of the site where tiddlers can let off steam without worrying about tripping over guy ropes, plus a simple (but endlessly entertaining) tyre swing for any adventurous kids. Firepits are available to hire here, or you can bring your own barbecue. Rather than foraging for firewood and disturbing the wildlife, please pack your own or buy a bundle on site. Other facilities include composting and blue-flushing toilets, hot showers and the water taps dotted around grounds. One last thing: there are no bins, so please take all litter home with you.

Local attractions

This historic corner of England is home to a good number of heritage sites, with particularly pleasing days to be had at Arundel Castle (25 minutes' drive), Lewes Castle (30 minutes) and Fishbourne Palace (50 minutes). Busy, buzzy Brighton (30 minutes) also has old-fashioned curios, like its Pavilion and Volk's Electric Railway. Stick around for modern attractions like the Sea Life Centre and i360 Tower. Brighton's also where to find several miles of holiday-grade beach (plenty of bars and food joints are located close to the water if you'd rather leave picnic prep for another day). Shoreham-by-Sea beach (15 minutes) has the advantage of being closer and a bit less busy than Brighton's; there's also an interesting 19th-century fort overlooking the harbour that's well worth poking around for an hour or so. After seaside days of various flavours, head inland for a sporting stint at West Sussex Golf Club (20 minutes), or dawdle in downland beauty spots like Devil's Dyke (25 minutes), Ditchling Beacon (25 minutes) or Chichester Harbour (50 minutes).
