  • In the South Downs National Park, 35 minutes' drive from Goodwood
  • Ensuite bathroom, fully equipped kitchen and firepit provided
Skip off to the South Downs National Park and a stylish stay among oodles of space to relax. Sussex Meadow Shepherd's Huts is part of a working farm in the West Sussex countryside, about 10 minutes’ drive from both Petworth and Haslemere, and it makes a pretty fabulous place for a comfy countryside break. There are only a couple of huts here, set at opposite ends of a field, so you’ll have lots of peace and privacy (or you could book a couple for a family/friends getaway where you’re not getting on top of each other all the time…) Views all around are of greenery, trees and natural flowers, whether you’re sitting outside cooking over the firepit or cosied up in bed peeking out of the window. Everything about these huts has been done with a comfortable stay in mind – they were hand-built locally to the highest standards and kitted out with all the bits you’ll need, including an ensuite bathroom and a fully equipped kitchen with gas hob and fridge. Extra perks include a woodburner to keep things cosy (and provide a fun way to make your tea), bean bags and atmospheric lighting. The whole thing is solar powered so there are no 3-pin plug sockets but you’ll have USB charging points. And if you think the huts are lovely… well, so are the surroundings. Over on the eastern side of the South Downs National Park, there are lots of great walking and bike routes all around (with village pubs to keep you refreshed), and it’s about a 40-minute drive to the south coast.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Lovely location for an unplugged few days away. The little hut had everything we needed. Lovely little touches from fresh flowers, cookies, marshmallows for toasting and milk in the fridge. Beds were comfortable and we loved the attention to details with providing games, books, outdoor seating and fire pit. Very well thought out and a very peaceful location if you fancy a few days away from it all. Petworth House is worth a visit and not too far. Lovely to see the bats at dusk and watch the sky full of stars at night.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Absolutely ideal location. It provided a great chance to escape from real life and to let the children run free across the fields and pick blackberries for snacks through the day. The Shepherds hut was quaint and very well thought out, we had everything we needed plus the owner left us homemade brownies and marshmallows for the fire, as well putting milk on the fridge for us. The beds are really comfy with fluffy pillows and duvet.

Disliked: The compost toilets took some getting used to

Local attractions

Lengthy hikes and short strolls alike should be easy to sort in the area around the farm – there are lots of splendid spots in the South Downs National Park, with some local favourites being Black Down and the Swan Barn Walk (both 15 minutes’ drive away). If you’d like to home in on specific attractions, take a look at the likes of the Goodwood estate (35 minutes), Weald & Downland Living Museum (35 minutes) and Hollycombe Steam in the Country (25 minutes), where you can ride a 2ft-gauge steam railway through the fields and woods. For garden strolls, see if you can catch one of the few weekends a year that Ramster Gardens (10 minutes) is open, or set off to Gilbert White's House & Gardens (35 minutes), which also has kids’ activities (bug hunts and the like) and excellent afternoon teas. The national park stretches all the way to the coast so you could also plan for seaside time around Bognor Regis, Littlehampton or Worthing (all about 40/45 minutes’ drive).
