  • Small, dog-friendly South Downs National Park site with two reservoirs
  • A five-minute drive to the South Downs Way and paddleboarding on site
  • Logs available for firepits and a pub five minutes’ walk away
Pick a hammock in the trees or a place to lay down underneath the sky and make time to relax, stargaze and get back to the basics… in between your wild swimming and paddleboarding, that is, because Wild Combe Camping in West Sussex has two private reservoirs for the sole use of their guests. This small, rural site tucked away in the South Downs National Park has no electricity (just the stars and the odd festoon lights hanging around). This is very much a family-focused site (furry friends included) all about making memories. What memories might these be? Well, perhaps nights around the firepit (the site sells logs from their felled trees for these) and paddleboarding on one of the two reservoirs (one is a short walk across a sleeper bridge and the other across a field). It'll surely include showering under the oak trees in a small copse with four bucket showers too. There’s a splendid copse for children to have adventures, as well as a rope swing and hammocks in the trees, and handy girls and boys’ loos. When you don’t fancy yet another barbecue, walk five minutes to the pub in Elsted village, which has views of the rolling South Downs, local beer and excellent food. The fuel will come in handy for all the walks in the South Downs – the South Downs Way is easily accessed five minutes’ drive away at Beacon Hill. Petersfield (15 minutes’ drive) to the west and Midhurst (10 minutes) to the east are places to sort any other essentials. When you budding explorers aren’t here, the fields go back to the way they were, and nature takes back control. That means you’re likely to see lots of wildlife. If you’re lucky this might include bouncy deer, super-fast hares, pheasants, herons by the reservoirs and frogs that have made their way over the fields and hedgerows in search of a watery home.

The Roughs primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful part of the Downs in walking distance to an excellent, family run pub. Lovely views, very peaceful, not too busy and plenty of space. We met the farm owner and she was lovely too! Our children loved the swings and playing in the woods. We would love to come back!

The Roughs primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Plenty of spaces, dog friendly, good layout, good location, friendly staff, very basic

Disliked: Couldn't locate the bins. There was a noisy group nearby ( lots of laughter so I forgive them 😊) Not many available loos so there was a small queue for my morning wee.

Tennis Wells primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great location and pitch, with a lovely pub in walking distance. We didn't even go swimming/sup on the reservoir as it was tipping with rain but had a great time at the campsite. Lots of beautiful villages and towns in the area with plenty to do.

Struttons primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I decided to take my 10 year old son for a nights camping last minute and found Wild Combe and decided to give it a go as it advertised 'water sport' and camp fires. The site is large and spread over a couple of fields. Mid week there were around 8 other campers families with small kids. Very friendly welcome and plenty of firewood for the evening at the eleven pounds including firepit (reasonable) We inflated a couple of canoes and took to he water around 9am and we were joined by others on paddle board. The revisor is bigger than it looks on from the bank once you're on the water and big enough for a couple of hours paddling and eating the kingfisher dart around the bank. Decided not to brave the 'bucket showers' on site but they did look clean as were the 'Loo s for Do's' withe plenty of hand sanitiser and toile paper. Great site and a wonderful impromptu night star gazing. Would highly recommend and we plan to return. M Cody

Bell tent

Liked: Really enjoyed the very clear signs to the campsites and clearly marked fields. Lyndsay was so lovely, helpful and made a lovely effort with my son. We hired a bell tent which was beautiful, had everything that was needed and very comfortable. The fields are lovely with lots of space to play and explore. The reservoir looked beautiful. The bucket showers are so refreshing and easy to use. Overall just had a really lovely stay!

Disliked: Only thing that we disliked was the smell of the loos, but also understand can't really avoid it in a wild camping experience!

Struttons primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We really loved our stay and would drlefinately choose to go back. Loved the firepits, being able to swim in the resevoir, being near the pub and nice walks. The site itself was very peaceful with plenty of space between each pitch. Everyone was friendly and it felt very safe.

Disliked: Real shame that there was no drinking water. This is probably the only reason we would think twice before staying again. It also seemed quite far from any walkable village/small shops, so we had to buy water at the pub. We didnt like having to buy lots of single use plastic bottles.

From the manager: Thank you for the review :) The water in our 1000 litre bowsers is drinking water, apologise if that wasn't made clear on arrival.

Struttons primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Cleanliness of the site. Pitches well spaced out. Fire pit and wood available. Great walks straight from the campsite.

Disliked: Bucket shower heads don’t work properly and only let a dribble through.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review :) We'll check the shower heads more often as leaves do fall in the connector, which can causes a bit of a blockage.
