  • Back to basics site in scenic South Downs countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Haywards Heath and 40 minutes from Brighton
  • Dog-friendly, with a play area and plenty of paths to follow on walks
Pretty countryside days full of literary stops, scenic spots and active plays... All part of the caboodle at Yamp Camp Kitts, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the small West Sussex town of Haywards Heath. The site’s less than five minutes from the edge of the High Weald, 15 minutes from South Downs National Park and – as an added bonus – is 20 minutes from the real-life Hundred Acre Woods (actually 500 acres), Ashdown Forest. Families may want to make immediate tracks for Ashdown, gathering fast-looking sticks en route for a competitive game of pooh sticks at the original Pooh Sticks Bridge. If a lazier day is preferable, there’s lots to do on site to keep kids who might not appreciate the concept of sitting in quiet contemplation busy. There’s plenty of room for running about wildly – and even more room for running around wildly with dog – and paths leading to the heritage line at Bluebell Railway (a five-minute drive, usually) and the nearest pub are easy ambles. That pub serves food, if hols mean a break from cooking, but self catering is a cinch too as campfires and barbecues are encouraged. Supplies can be handily got in the supermarkets in Haywards Heath or by opting for farm to table at some of the farm shops in the area (including Townings Farm, 10 minutes away).

Local attractions

South Downs National Park and the High Weald altogether too wild? Opt instead to wander among the gardens at Borde Hill, Sheffield Park, Nymans, Wakehurst and Leonardslee – all handily within half an hour’s drive – where landscapers including Capability Brown put some structure on nature’s wilder impulses. Leonardslee is also a choice stop for zoologists and tipplers, with wallabies (and native species) roaming the grounds, and wine – and chocolate and cheese – tastings on offer. History anoraks should aim for the gardens too, as there’s a dolls’ house museum to explore and afternoon tea to tuck into in the 19th-century mansion. Tastes of the past piqued at Leonardslee? Make the town of Lewes in East Sussex the next stop, 20 minutes from base. It’s home to a medieval castle, the Museum of Sussex Archaeology and a house that Henry VIII’s fourth wife got in the annulment (and then never visited – tsk), which is now a Tudor museum. For explores a little further afield, start 20 minutes from base at Barcombe Mills where there are boats to hire for lengthy days swanning along the river Ouse. Not far enough? Brighton’s Royal Pavilion, aquarium and Palace Pier are 40 minutes away, and the sights, shops, theatres and eateries of London are a 45-minute train journey from Haywards Heath.
