  • Family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the South Downs
  • Beaches, horse racing and stunning country houses within 10 minutes
  • A 15-minute drive from Chichester cathedral city
Can’t decide whether you want to spend your hols among lush hills and dales or splashing around south-coast beaches? You’re in luck: at Prince of Wales, a family-friendly site in the village of Woodgate, 15 minutes’ drive from the West Sussex cathedral city of Chichester, you can have the lot. This small site in the grounds of a traditional country pub is nearly midway between the South Downs and the southern coast, placing you about five minutes from the edge of the national park for scenic hiking, biking and riding routes, and 10 minutes from sand and sea. Equestrian types will definitely want to canter in this direction too: the site is well placed for track days at Fontwell Park and Goodwood (both within 10 minutes) and, if you’re as comfortable riding as you are watching, you might want to trot over to Hunters Lodge Riding Centre (15 minutes) for a day on horseback. No doubt that’ll work up an appetite, which is where the benefits of staying on a pub site come into play: the restaurant a few moments’ stroll away so nab a table for some home-cooked food, then wander into the bar for a game of pool or darts. This is a dog-friendly pub, so feel free to bring Rex along – the owners reckon your best friend needs some hols too. If you’d rather steer clear of other people for an evening, you can fire up the barbecue back at home base and pile it high with goodies from the shop a 10-minute walk down the road.

Local attractions

Early on in your stay, you’re going to want to make tracks for the Goodwood Estate, whether you’re a fan of the gee-gees or not – there’s plenty here for all tastes, including tours and afternoon tea in the house, fab gardens, a couple of golf courses, a motoring track (time your stay for the Festival of Speed or the Goodwood Revival), and airborne trips from the aerodrome. Goodwood isn’t the only old stately pile in the area, so anyone with a penchant for landed estates and glamorous history should glide to Arundel, Uppark, Parham and Petworth for house tours and turns through the gardens. Like your history a little less grand? History buffs are well served nearby and trips to the Bignor Roman Villa and Fishburne Roman Palace come highly recommended. For kids tiring of traipsing through the past, give them one last chance to learn something at the Weald and Downland Living Museum – an open-air museum covering 1,000 years of history – before heading to Bognor Regis for miniature golf, a miniature railway and a boating lake.
