A site in the grounds of the 16th-century Bat and Ball Country Pub, surrounded by six acres of inn estate and just under an hour from London? If that sounds like dream holiday material, then sign up for a lushly scenic stay at Oakfields Camping five minutes from the villages of Billingshurst and Wisborough Green in West Sussex. Oakfields is right on the edge of the South Downs National Park, minutes' walk from comely canals and within 30 minutes' drive of also-comely English villages like Petworth and Midhurst: be sure to wear your explorer's hat for this trip… Once you've worked up an appetite from wandering the Downs, canals and villages of West Sussex, you won't have to go far to build your strength back up – head to Haywards Restaurant, in the Bat and Ball, a few steps from your pitch, for food and drinks to while the evening away. This is an all-grass site, so there's plenty of room to kick back and relax after dinner, or you can hang around in the Bat and Ball and soak up the atmosphere.

Local attractions

This part of West Sussex is a lovely locale and is crammed with things to see and do, such as the county's stately homes and historic houses, busy market towns, old and pretty villages, and – natch – the splendid Sussex seaside. The 260-square-mile stretch of chalk hills that make up South Downs National Park are only a mile from Oakfields Camping. Many a hike is to be had here, including along the local stretch of the South Downs Way from Billingshurst, east to Eastbourne or west to Winchester, and the coastal walks around the white cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head. Family adventures at Fishers Farm Park are easily accessible from the site for family members of all ages; at nearby Horsham, take the crew to stalk each other through the violet labyrinth of the local paintball centre, or to the 90 acres of Chesworth Farm. Also nearby is Petworth Park, a National Trust mansion with arty works by the likes of Turner and Blake, and a 700-acre landscaped park with the biggest herd of fallow deer in England.
