  • Peaceful farm site at the south of the Surrey Hills National Landscape
  • A 20-minute drive from Horsham; half an hour from the South Downs
  • Farm produce for sale on site; small firepits permitted on site
You're free to pick any spot that takes your fancy at Etherley Farm, a roomy farm site at the very south of the Surrey Hills National Landscape. Around an hour and a half's drive south of London, this is a pretty handy location indeed, 20 minutes' drive away from Horsham and the High Weald National Landscape and half an hour from the South Downs National Park. The site has basic facilities including water, individual showers and a toilet block, but no electric hook-ups. Although the poultry farm at Etherley isn't open to visitors, it's a different matter for guests, who can bag some of its mouthwatering produce for their barbecue: chicken, burgers and sausages are all on sale (just drop the owners a line stating what you’d like when you book). Small fires are welcome on site, but only on previously burnt areas and a safe distance away from neighbours or tents. You can't take any wood from the surrounding National Trust woodland, so instead the site sells bags of logs from their local produce shop. Alternatively, bring your own, ensuring it's free from nails and screws.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: This is a lovely, very popular site. The facilities are excellent, 7 showers, 7 toilets, disabled and baby friendly toilet/shower. Also washing up facilities and a farm shop, what more could you ask You could purchase wood for an outdoor fire and the atmosphere was just lovely

Disliked: Nothing except the weather and you can do nothing about that!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: I arrived on a motorbike and had to swerve around several half bricks which had been left by previous campers who had had bonfires. Considered leaving after 1st night as I wasn’t impressed with the condition of the washing up area or shower and toilet facilities. The washing up sinks were dirty the whole time and drain holes full of food. There was no roof or shelter over the sinks so you got rained on whilst washing up. No plugs, so washed plates under very hot running water. The toilet and shower area was communal, clearly not cleaned every day, cobwebs everywhere and hooks falling off doors. I didn’t want to use the shower. A very noisy family - shouting, swearing and belching loudly caused me to relocate my tent after 30 mins. This noise continued until very late. I didn’t notice the owners checking on the site once. I could put up with the sound of turkeys gobbling until it got dark but I won’t be staying here again!!!

From the manager: We are a small, seasonal, straightforward campsite which is part of a working farm. The toilet and shower block is a converted old farm building and adjoined to other buildings that are used as part of the farm. We are in no way comparable to a dedicated, full time campsite. As many of our reviews will attest, our facilities are clean and hot water is valued. Most of our campers take the opportunity to have a small open fire (rather than a bonfire) which is one of the attractions of our site. Bricks will be used to surround the fire and/or cook on. We do leave them, so other campers can have the benefit. We are an informal site and don’t undertake constant checks of our campers. However, we do live and work on site and can normally identify and deal with undesirable behaviour. Our Produce Shop does have fairly long opening hours during the camping season and is the place to report concerns about cleanliness, lost plugs and other campers conduct. We are then in a position to do something about it.

Shower is good with hot water and clean facilities. The venue…

Liked: Shower is good with hot water and clean facilities. The venue is easy to find and quiet but it is quite closed to Gatwick airport and have some noise until midnight. Anyway will visit again next year.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Location was excellent. Hot, powerful showers and pretty clean facilities. Decent shop with all the necessities.

Disliked: Hoity Toity, over privileged owner (I assumed she was the owner) who felt she could speak to us like naughty children because we were unaware of one of the rules, we were apologetic but she continued to lecture us in what can obly be described as condescending and rude. Decide if you're running a family campsite or if it's a play thing to allow you to speak down to the common folk that stay with you. Manners cost nothing.

From the manager: We hope that all campers read the rules prior to their stay - they are the basis for your conduct and the terms and conditions of your stay. Our rules are simple and relate to the respect and enjoyment of the environment and other campers. This particular incident related to taking wood from the woodland. We are surrounded by ancient woodland which is managed by our landlord, The National Trust. Taking wood is not an option and campers are asked not to do so. We do sell logs for convenience, however campers are very welcome to bring their own. We are happy to answer any questions prior to your stay so you can plan your visit accordingly. Without the cooperation and support of our landlord, we would not be able to run our campsite.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: We stayed on Etherley Farm for 5 days, we liked the quietness of the campsite. The campsite is basic without electric pitches. The staff is very friendly and helpfull an d a few basic rules are sufficient for running the campsite in a very relaxed way, resulting in a very laid back stay. We loved it.
