Liked: We had a lovely time staying here. Pitches are big, allocated and marked off so you know how much space is yours. We stayed near the park which was fab as my 6 year old was able to come and go as he pleased. It was a perfect space for the kids to go and play. Just up on the hill/bank could watch the go kart racing. Good facilities - toilets and showers accessible by key fob provided at check in. There's men's and women's separate plus a family room which was handy with the young ones. Family room had toilet baby change and shower. Communal area with fridge/freezer/washing up area. Handy little shop on site. Sold things like bread, condiments, toiletries, paracetamol, ice cream, sweets, kites and little toys. Was told on check in it was open 9-8 but was closed for long periods of time during our stay but wasn't a huge issue for us. An ice cream van also visited in the afternoons whilst we were there so that was nice for the kids. Can hire firepits, reasonably priced too. We stayed two nights and both mornings there was alot of gunshots so must be a shooting range nearby? This didn't bother us as we're early risers with the kids anyway but if your looking for a lie in this may bother you. Overall was a good stay for us and we would stay again!

Disliked: The showers were operated by a press button, giving roughly 10 seconds of water. I understand this is probably to help save on water however it makes washing your hair or showering with an infant a little more tricky.

From the manager: Thank you for a great detailed review and feedback. We do have the MOD close by so this is what you would have heard. They have variable times when it comes to practicing. Hopefully we will welcome you again next season :)

Liked: We really liked the camp site has a nice park for the kids and large areas to play in away from cars and tents, which was nice. Fishing Lake was a nice place to fish and walk the dogs. Staff was helpfully polite and engaged with the kids, making their experience more enjoyable.

Disliked: I have no dislikes just a few more toilets and showers would be nice.

Liked: Electric hookup. Clean toilets. Good little shop. Ability to have a fire and hire fire pit £17

Disliked: This is just a grass field, which could be anywhere. There are no views of a lake. The lake it outside of the campsite. The toilet and shower block are on a public road, outside of the camp site. I did not therefore like the kids going off to the toilet on their own, or using the facilities early or late in the day. It made me feel less safe than where the facilities are in the camp site. Annoyingly, because of the above, you have to use a key to get to the toilet and they only give one key per family. There are no pubs, cafes or restaurants within walking distance. The sheep in the nearby field are incredibly loud and will wake you up early. So, you have the noise of the countryside but none of the scenery. The play area was good for smaller children

From the manager: Thanks for your review. The whole of Herons Park is private property and yes you do have to cross the road to access the toilets/showers but its certainly not a public road. It's a private one that gives access to the caravans on site. Interesting that you say its 'just a grass field' I'm not sure what you expect when going camping.... We have a play park, shop, washing up hut, floral displays. Bit of a strange remark I feel. The lakes are not on the camping field no, that would be dangerous and they are pretty big, one is nearly a mile long! One is located behind the bank which you cannot see form the field but you can walk round etc in the day. The other can be seen from some of the pitches and there are plenty of pictures online that show this with beautiful sunsets. There are also 2 more which I would describe as more ponds in the SSSI area which can also be enjoyed with a walk. We do use a fob system on the toilets and showers as we found the Kart Track users will try and sneak in and use the showers so this is to prevent this. We also have a lot of fobs go missing so normally we would give out 2 per pitch but if there is only one adult we give out just the one. Not sure how this was an issue when you said above you didn't like to let your children go on their own anyway. There is a café located at the Kart Circuit which would have been open during your stay. Many guests have walked to the pubs etc in town but they are a 35 minute walk and would understand anyone not wanting to do this walk. We do have plenty of local delivery companies though. I would always recommend doing your research prior to booking anywhere to see what's in the area and what is not. We are out in the marshes and the 'scenery' is marsh land. Its unique and if you're expecting the cairngorms' you will not find it here. Many guests appreciate the unique beauty that the marsh has to offer. Visit Dungeness and you will probably not find another place like it. We are proud to be different and tick most guests boxes. Sorry we weren't for you. Hopefully you will find somewhere that suits you better next time :)

Liked: Pitch was nice and flat. I liked that the shop was very well stocked with things like the chunky gas bottles, food, drinks (including Prime, wine, cider etc), footballs etc. The girls on reception were great and really helpful. I liked there was a family room as I went with my son and daughter but son is of the age he doesn’t like to go in the ladies now. There is a shower and toilet in the family room and a further 2 showers and 2 toilets in the ladies. I thought as there weren’t many toilets that there would be lots of queueing but we didn’t queue at all. It was great that they have a communal fridge where you can add the date you are leaving so they throw it out after. There was also a small freezer to use. There is a play park close by the campsite so my 2 enjoyed playing with other campsite children especially a game of football.

Disliked: The toilets and showers were just outside of the campsite which wasn’t far to walk but it meant as I was camping on my own with 2 children, we would all have to go together. You get one key fob to use the toilets/showers which made it a bit difficult. I personally found it a little scary needing to use the toilet late at night with men around me just because you couldn’t see the toilets from our tent. The first night we went to use the toilets I heard something heavy fall right next to me and it was a cockroach! I think it had fallen from the guttering on the toilet block. Put me off as until then I’d never seen a cockroach in the UK! It was big and started jumping around when a gentleman touched it. The sheep! Haha I had no idea sheep could be so loud. Nice little wake up call in the early hours as they’re literally right behind the pitches on one side. I think it’s near a military base as at 7am one morning there was a very low flying aircraft. I’d already been woken some time earlier by the sheep so didn’t wake me but if the sheep didn’t wake you the aircraft would have as it was so low it made the ground rumble. The only other grumble would be that it’s not walkable to anywhere. We were told it was about 45min walk down not a great path, to the nearest beach which was a pebble beach and our best bet was to drive to Camber.

From the manager: Its seems you have reviewed both of your bookings which seems unfair but I will reply to both separately as they do mention different points. I'm pleased you had a good stay, from what I can make out it still seems that way and there are plenty of things you did enjoy about the site. The toilets and showers are lit up well but the field is particularly dark. Generally campers do not want the field lit up due to being too much light coming through the canvas of the tent and also ruining the nights sky. We do suggest all campers bring a torch when visiting us. Valid points about the the military base although I think its the airport that may have been the aircraft, possibly a search and rescue plane that operates from there, or the search and rescue helicopter. I guess it depends on what you deem as not walkable. We are remote and lots of guests do find plenty of walks or places to walk to. But yes, driving to the likes of camber I can see why you wouldn't want to walk to it. We do encourage guests to do their research and check out the area prior to staying with us. I can't say I have ever seen a cockroach here either to be honest, are you sure it wasn't a dune fly? In any case you mentioned this was outside and our toilets and showers are kept clean so I am not sure of its relevance. Most guests love it here so sorry we didn't meet your expectations.

Liked: Lovely little camp site. Very clean! Lovely little shop, very friendly staff. Nice little playground and from the top of the hill you can spectate racing on the track. You can do fire at the site. They have old washing machines drums converted into fire burner you can hire. It will come with a bag full of wood and it’s a very safe to have a cozy fire if you can little kids with you. We stayed for only 1 night but if you stay for a longer period, you have very good choice of local activities. Karting circuit only 100 meters away. Water park with inflatables only 2 minutes drive. Dungeness only 15 minutes drive. Beautiful nature around for a nice long walk. Local little supermarket 5 minutes away. Will definitely come back gain for longer stay

Local attractions

A go-karting circuit and a watersports centre are right next door to Herons Park, each with a shop and with expert tuition and courses available for visitors. The Port Lympne Wild Animal Park, an award-winning reserve set over 600 acres near Hythe, is also recommended if you're on hol with the offspring, as is the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway steaming along for 13 and a half miles from Hythe to the National Nature Reserve of Dungeness. Lathe Farm at New Romney and the Rare Breeds Farm at Ashford should also be popular picks. For beaches, clamber the dunes or go kite buggying at Camber Sands, the only sand dune system in East Sussex, and tackle more fishing (for mackerel) at Dymchurch, like Camber Sands also a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its insect and plant life. Fish, chips and Kent coast views can all be had at the Dungeness headland. Several bike routes are nearby, including the National Cycle Network 2 running through Lydd on its Romney Marsh route from Hythe to Rye; along the four or so miles of the Royal Military Canal, and circular routes around the marsh from New Romney or Snargate. The cobbled streets and afternoon teas of ancient Rye are about ten miles from the site.
