  • Family- and dog-friendly site on a Kent working farm
  • A 10-minute drive from Canterbury and Herne Bay beach
  • Firewood and fresh eggs for sale
To the Kent countryside and a handy spot that’s equally well placed for Canterbury and the coast as well as rural wanders. Chaucer Farm Camping is a family-friendly spot on a working farm just outside Sturry, with easy access to all sorts of days out. If you’re in the market for a proper rural day or two, you might like to walk straight out from the site to Kemberland Wood, a couple of minutes away or take the kids up to Wildwood Trust (a couple of minutes’ drive away) to meet the animals. Elsewhere, a 10-minute drive will get you up to the coast at Herne Bay for beach days or over to Canterbury to stroll through the historic streets (and maybe learn a bit about Chaucer himself at the Canterbury Tales exhibit). Back at base, it’s a fairly simple setup, with just a couple of toilets, a shower and chemical disposal on the facilities front, but there’s also a well-equipped play area where the kids can have a run about. Campfires are welcome here, as long as they’re kept off the ground, and the friendly folk on site are happy to provide firewood to help you along with your blaze. Need something to cook? There’s a small supermarket a mile away, but surely your meals will be at their tastiest when made from the farm’s own provisions: fresh eggs are available to buy on site.

Liked: Lovely camp site. Both Maggie and Steve were really welcoming and made sure we know where everything was on site and around the area. On-site facilitates: toilets, shower, washing station, electric points on most pitches. Love that they offered fire pits for a reasonable price. Would highly recommend if you want a quiet intimate stay. Family & dog friendly too!!

Liked: Small friendly campsite. Maggie was very helpful and welcoming. We appreciated the farm eggs on arrival. Pitch sizes are generous. There is a nice little play area for younger children. Facilities are basic and kept clean. You can hire fire pits and buy wood/kindling on site. Lots to do in the surrounding area. We enjoyed our stay.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Really enjoyed the personal feel of Chaucer farm, Maggie was very welcoming and helpful without being overbearing at all. The facilities are basic but perfect and kept extremely clean at all times which is impressive!! The pitches were spaced out nicely and we were thoughtfully placed by the climbing frame which the kids loved. The added touch or Maggie providing a fire pit for us to use for free was perfect. The farm is a perfect location for exploring local area and beaches.

Disliked: My only criticism would be that its right next to the main road so if there were any scope to move it in a field that would make a huge difference, but otherwise no complaints at all- a lovely stay!!

Liked: Maggie was really helpful and friendly. Nice size pitch. Good size area for children to play in the middle of the field and play equipment. Perfect location for us as we were attending a wedding nearby. We had to borrow a pump as cars are not allowed on the grass Had a lovely weekend

Disliked: The toilets were extremely basic but did the job. Only one shower , on the field, among tents, felt more of a spectacle than personal grooming Could do with more signage on the road , coming into the site. We overshot and had to pop to the roundabout to turn back round.

Liked: Liked that it was a small feild, but an open space for the kids to play, the park made a huge difference, especially with autistic children that struggle to initiate a freindship, it helped my son and daughter both interact with other children, Maggie was exceptionally accommodating, very freindly and very passionate about what she does, winning touch with the fresh eggs provided upon arrival and a tour of the grounds, all amenities were kept clean at all times, not one unhappy camper was on site, brilliant little trip away, would absolutely reccomend, and we will be booking to stay again!!

Liked: Lovely space, great location, maggie was an excellent host and gave us 6 eggs on arrival. Site was immaculately clean.

Disliked: Only 1 shower! Site could be a bit noisy early morning as it’s on a working farm and also by a main road. Also can’t park next to the pitch.

Local attractions

Countryside first? It’s only a couple of minutes’ walk to Kemberland Wood, or about 10 minutes’ drive to West Blean and Thornden Woods for a stroll along tree-lined trails. You may spot a bit of wildlife as you wander, but for guarantees on that front you’ll want to head to Wildwood Trust (two minutes’ drive) to meet native British beasts including wild horses and bears. For more exotic animals, plan days out at Howletts Wild Animal Park (15 minutes) and Wingham Wildlife Park (20 minutes). Or, if you’re more into history and pretty gardens, take a trip to the 17th-century mansion and Capability Brown-designed gardens at Chilham Castle (25 minutes). Ready for the coast? It’s about a 10-minute drive to Herne Bay, or 15 minutes to Whitstable. You can also tick off a truly iconic British sight with a visit to the White Cliffs of Dover (35 minutes). In among all this it’s worth finding time for city strolls too: Canterbury is only about 10 minutes’ drive away for visits to the cathedral, the Roman Museum and the Canterbury Tales exhibit.
