  • Worsley Obelisk 40 minutes’ walk; Shanklin Beach 15 minutes’ drive
  • Compost toilets, water and USB charging; pubs 15 minutes’ stroll
No frills. No fuss. Just fresh air and bags of space to play. That’s what you get at Rusty Meadow pop-up site, which is 15 minutes’ drive from Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. Set in three acres of peaceful farmland, it has back-to-basics pitches in a hay meadow with composting toilets, drinking water and a solar-powered USB charging point. They’ve got almost all the essentials covered here – but it's worth noting there are no showers on site. A stay at Rusty Meadow is all about that old-school camping feel, with lots of wildlife around (look out for hares) and starry skies at night. The pitches are 15 minutes’ stroll from Godshill village, with its stores, tearooms and pubs as well as a fantastic wooden play park. It’s also only 15 minutes by car from Newport for supermarket shopping. Bring your boots, because there are lots of superb walking and cycling trails right from the camping field, including the route up to the Worsley Obelisk (about 40 minutes’ walk) for some of the island’s best views. Just so you know, there are bees living happily in the wildflower meadow at the far end of the farm. They’re a good distance from the pitches and keep to themselves, but the owners like to let guests know in case of any allergies. Families, small groups and quiet campers are very welcome. If you’re after loud music, late nights and party vibes, this is probably not the site for you.

Local attractions

As well as its eateries and play park, Godshill (15 minutes’ walk) has a retro attraction at the Model Village, with scale replicas of Isle of Wight towns and a mini-train chugging around the topiary gardens. There’s also a quality gift shop at The Old Smithy and Gardens, as well as a kitschy fairy-themed trail through the grounds. Have fun with the kids while supporting a good cause at the Isle Of Wight Donkey Sanctuary (five minutes’ drive), or meet kangaroos and meerkats at Amazon World Zoo (10 minutes). To stretch your legs and hopefully spot some local wildlife, follow the Red Squirrel Trail from Wroxall (also 10 minutes) for sightings of (you guessed it) red squirrels as well as deer and woodpeckers. The site is just a short drive from south-coast beaches, including Shanklin and Ventnor (both 15 minutes), and Compton Bay (25 minutes). Hit a rainy day? Climb aboard the Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Havenstreet (20 minutes) and enjoy island views from a classic train carriage.
