Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nice quiet campsite in a convenient location with clean, well designed facilities.

Disliked: Limited availability of level pitches but actually the gentle slope really wasn't a problem.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The field was exactly as it says on the tin! Back to nature, simple and wild camping with a wood campfire allowed! Which is rare on the island. Mist say they allow campfires, but when reading the small print, it declares briquettes only, which isn't a campfire, it's a BBQ!!! So we were really pleased when we found this place that allowed the burning of wood on a raised burner - the campfire is a definite necessity with our 3 boys. The owners were amazingly friendly and helpful. Regularly checking in with us, even though they are not based on site. There were compostable toilets and a warm shower. The historic town of Brading was a 2 minute walk away for everything else. Plenty of space for our boys to run round when on site, and some great tips of places to visit with them from Ruby and Ginnie. It was brilliant! Just what we wanted.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Location was great for us and plenty of space for the kids to play. Great value for money, especially as we have a large family - no restrictions or extra cost for dogs / gazebos etc. Blackberry bushes kept the kids busy - the kids loved picking the berries!

Disliked: The toilet and shower situation. They were a bit dirty and uncomfortable. Easier for the boys because they didn't have to sit but I chose not to use them and use local supermarket / family facilities instead.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, we're pleased you liked the location and space. We appreciate your feedback on the facilities. We do clean these a minimum of twice daily, but cleanliness between cleans does rely on campers reading the instructions (men and women need to sit down). We are improving the facilities each year and hope to be able to improve comfort in time :)

Local attractions

There's some gorgeous countryside around here to keep walkers, cyclists and nature lovers busy for many a day – you may like to look out for red squirrels at Alverstone Mead, follow the Bembridge Trail or take a wander around the National Trust’s Bembridge Fort and Downs (all about 10 minutes’ drive away). If spotting wildlife on site has got you wondering what else you might be able to see around here, head out for more animal sightings at places like Wildheart Animal Sanctuary (five minutes), Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary (15 minutes) or Amazon World Zoo (15 minutes). Dinosaur Isle (five minutes) is another popular place to visit (even though its residents are not all that lively any more…) For beach time, you may like to head down into Sandown (five minutes) or along to Shanklin (10 minutes); a little further takes you to the sandy beach in Ventnor (25 minutes) or the rockpools of Steephill Cove (25 minutes). Top attractions like Osborne House, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and Blackgang Chine are all within a half-hour drive too.
