  • Relaxed glamping in a converted Texas school bus on the Isle of Wight
  • A 10-minute drive to Ryde Beach and Dinosaur Isle; Osborne 15 minutes
  • Proper beds, well-equipped kitchen, ensuite shower and outdoor seating
Here’s a chance to rest your head in a cleverly converted, bright-yellow Texas school bus for an Insta-worthy stay with American School Bus Glamping at Isle of Wight. Freshly retired from the highways of Houston, this is an iconic split-screen bus – known as a ‘skoolie’ by all US school kids. The bus is surprisingly spacious, with enough room for couples, families and groups of friends alike. There’s a proper kitchen with a gas oven, hob, grill, sink, and cooking equipment galore, so you can whip up proper suppers to eat at the proper dining table. Underfloor heating and a woodburning stove ensure that you stay toasty, no matter what the weather, and if it should rain, choose your favourite from the books and games on board and settle down for the afternoon. If music’s more your thing, bring your Bluetooth speaker and choose your own tunes. When it’s time to turn in, the king-size bed has Egyptian cotton bedding and is flanked by windows so you’ll wake up to stunning views of the downs. As the bus sleeps up to six, there are two comfy singles and a sofa bed too. Freshen up in the shower with fluffy towels and toiletries provided (there’s an illuminated mirror and a plug socket for hairdryers), then it’s on with planning your day. Perhaps make friends with the lambs and chickens on site? Or fire up the barbecue (buy what you need from the campsite’s farm shop) to enjoy a sizzling alfresco supper at your outdoor dining table?

Local attractions

If you’re aboard the school bus with kids, perhaps the first port of call will be the beach. Bembridge Beach is good for mini-explorers determined to find treasure amongst the shingle, as well as being a hot spot for dinghy sailing. The shallow waters at Priory Beach (both 15 minutes’ drive) are safe for younger kids to have a paddle, and sandy Ryde Beach (10 minutes) is backed by amusement arcades and cosy cafés for family jaunts. Kids can control a robotic dinosaur at the interactive Dinosaur Isle (10 minutes), or encounter macaws, meerkats and endangered red pandas at Amazon World Zoo. As well as gibbons, eagle owls and lemurs reside in spacious quarters at Monkey Haven - Primate Rescue Centre, and big cats are found at Wildheart Animal Sanctuary (all 15 minutes), where TV’s “Tiger Island” is filmed. Keen to get some history in too? Take a tour of the flower-filled gardens and grandiose apartments at Osborne (20 minutes), once the holiday home of Queen Victoria and now host of her impressive personal collection of art and furniture.
