Relaxing in the sunshine

  • Quiet Hampshire site with large grass pitches and easy road access
  • In the Test Valley, less than a mile from Stockbridge town centre
  • Wild-style camping on a low-key farm; firewood for sale on site
Time in the Test Valley is time well spent – this lovely pocket of Hampshire is well-known for its scenery, clear chalk streams and gentle pace of life, making it just the spot for a laidback camping break. Stockbridge View, a quiet site near the Test Valley market town of Stockbridge, is conveniently located just off the A30. This back to basics choice is within easy reach of Winchester (20 minutes' drive), Salisbury (25 minutes), Stonehenge (25 minutes) and Southampton (35 minutes). The pitches here are set over a flat and grassy area that's bordered by trees and hedgerows. You can pitch up wherever you like at this laidback farm spot, and all parts of the site are a few minutes’ walk from good basic amenities like a modern toilet and shower block and a chemical disposal point (please use green fluid). Campfires, barbecues and firepits are welcome here as long as they are lifted well off the grass. Handily, firewood is available to buy if you haven't brought your own fuel. Wood-fired pizzas, kebabs, pub food and a small supermarket are all available less than a mile away in Stockbridge town centre via a quiet bridleway. Please note that there's a clay pigeon shooting range half a mile away and therefore there may be some noise from that heard on site (mainly on Saturdays, but sometimes on other days).

Primitive cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: We were warmly greeted by onsite staff and advised of pitching options. Staff checked in with us later in the day and the following morning that all was ok . Facilities were clean overall (bearing in mind it was a bank holiday weekend and site was busy). Water was very hot. Some nice touches such as usb charging points and freezer and icepacks in the undercover area. Great to be allowed wood burners.

Disliked: nothing :)

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: This is a great site, beautifully located, quiet in spite of the proximity to the A30, within a short walk of a lovely town (Stockbridge) and an English Heritage site (Danebury Hill Fort), dog and child friendly, with clean, modern, and abundant showers, toilets, washing up facilities, water standpoints and picnic tables.

There are no electric hookups but this presents no issues for a 3 night stay in a campervan.

Extremely friendly and helpful owners.

Flexible timings for arrivals and departures.

Just over an hour from south west London.

Disliked: Can’t fault it - we’ve already booked to come back.

Liked: This site is perfect for visits into Stockbridge and walking or cycling to Mottisfont National Trust property. If you’ve read my review regarding the bluebell wood and Wallington please accept my apologies as it was a completely different site 🫣🫣

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Unlimited pitch size, claena shower and toilet block, can have fire pit, nice walk down to village, can buy fire on site, food van in the morning!
Nothing for kids to do( so no playground etc), but hut with cleaning up facilities has got lovely map and info about where to go.
Basic site so don't expect entertainment, it is really lovely to being back to basics. Kids just run free;)

Disliked: Nothing really, maybe in the showers and extra hook/hanger shelf would be useful, but otherwise no issues.
Site is located next to the road, if you with little one, probably better to park/set up on the other side of the pitch.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The Campsite looked lovely online.
The booking experience was simple and easy
And the Owner sounded a lovely Gent on the phone.

Disliked: When my friend and I looked on line. This campsite said it was 14 miles away. On booked on line I didn't actually notice the campsites location from where we was on the isle of Purbeck near Swanage.
Once booked we entered the details into the satnav and it was over the other side of the new forest miles away from us and not the drive we had in us at the end of the day. "SO THATS 14 MILES OVER THE WATER AS THE CROW FLIES YOU HALFWITS !" YOU need to sort that out on the app.
Anyway on calling the campsite and explaining this to the poor owner. He also agreed we was many many miles away.

Local attractions

For greenery and gardens, try Houghton Lodge (five minutes' drive), a small-scale spot dating back to the late 18th century in a gorgeous riverside location. The grounds at Mottisfont (15 minutes), a National Trust-managed house and garden, may be a bit grander in scale, but they're in a relaxed country location and aren't too big for a day out with young kids. This part of the world has lots of military connections, so how about a trip to the Army Flying Museum (10 minutes), or to Winchester (20 minutes) and its regimental collections in Peninsula Square? Inspired to try a bit of target practice yourself? The Spitfire Shoot (five minutes) can sort you with clay pigeon sessions (mostly on Saturdays, but sometimes at other times too). A little bit further away there are world-class attractions like Stonehenge (25 minutes), a must-see when visiting this part of the world, as well as family-focused options like Paultons Park (30 minutes), a theme park, and the interactive exhibits at Milestones Museum in Basingstoke (30 minutes).
