  • Spacious pop-up site five minutes' drive from Romsey
  • New Forest and Peppa Pig World within 10 minutes' drive
  • Dog-friendly pitches with no artificial light for great stargazing
Small Trees Campsite is a spacious pop-up site in the Hampshire countryside, about five minutes’ drive from Romsey. The large camping field here is surrounded by a variety of trees, and you can choose to pitch in an open space or a more sheltered spot. Families and dogs are welcome, and the latter can be walked nearby on Canada Common. Life on site is all very peaceful – you may well spot kites and buzzards circling overhead, and can finish your day warming up by a firepit, which you can hire on site (on a first come, first served basis); wood is also available to buy. On selected evenings you’ll also be able to buy wood-fired pizzas for an easy evening meal as the sun sets. A water supply and separate male and female toilets are available on site, along with hot showers, but please note that there’s absolutely no artificial light here so you’ll need a torch to find your way around after dark. The trade-off, of course, is that the lack of light pollution often leads to some stunning stargazing on site. As for getting out and about, you can cycle over to the New Forest in about half an hour, or hail a bus from the stop a short walk away for services to Salisbury, Romsey or Peppa Pig World.

The Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The owner was friendly and had excellent communication, she was quick to respond to my inquiry about arriving late, and there was plenty of space to pitch. I was really happy to find a campsite at such a reasonable price.

Disliked: no showers, chemical toilet block (but they were clean!).

The Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Pitches were nice, campfires allowed. Rope swing for the kids and a few play areas for very young children. You can hire fire pits and buy wood onsite. People who run it are very friendly and helpful. Free tea & coffee in the morning. Will definitely stay again.

Disliked: Grass was a bit long which meant feet got wet when walking to and from toilets.

From the manager: Hello, Thanks for the kind comments. Glad you enjoyed your stay. Unfortunately with the ridiculous August weather we've had we haven’t been able to cut the grass as much as we’d like. We usually have it cut shorter for you all. Hopefully next year allows us to do so! All the best.

The Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The tea/coffee in the morning was a lovely touch. The campsite is wonderfully designed for familes and particularly those with small children. The owner heated up some milk for my recently turned 2 year old. The toilets are very clean and well made.

The Field primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: A pretty field with plenty of small trees! Very well set out and you can pitch where you like. Simple and minimal facilities - toilets, water & washing up sink, with the considerate provision of morning tea & coffee for those travelling light. Some play equipment for little children, which my visiting baby granddaughter loved and bigger ones were having a great time on the rope swing. Sophie was very welcoming. I love that fire pits are allowed and can be provided - a camp fire adds something lovely to a summer evening. Only a short drive to the open access New Forest and I took the dogs for several long walks and there are plenty of other places to visit nearby. I had very tasty fish & chips from Caught in Romsey for my last night treat.

From the manager: Thanks so much for visiting, Shirley! Thank you for the lovely feedback. You’re right, that fish and chips is delicious!

The Field primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Chilled atmosphere, loads of space, lovely views, clean and tidy, toilet tissue and hand towels provided, also tea and coffee in the morning, fire pits to hire, surrounded by small trees.

Disliked: Whilst I was initially thrilled to find the provided toilets were a solid structure I was rather disconcerted by the colour of the brown flushing liquid, also the smell. I assumed there was some recyling of the flushing water going on. Normally mobile units have blue or clear water. It would have put my mind at rest if there was some explanatory notice about this. That would have made me more accepting of it especially if there were environmental benefits. Hard to see the sign at the entrance as low down and not visible if coming from the west. I drove past several times before spotting it.

From the manager: Thanks for the lovely feedback. In relation to the toilets we made the mistake last year of adding too much chemical and breaking the loos so this year have been a little more cautious with how much we’ve added! It’s a delicate balance to keep it just right. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. With regard to the sign, sorry it’s small, we don’t want to attract unwanted attention but google maps takes you directly to you site. Hope you had a great few days. Sophie
