  • Spacious and peaceful working farm site on the banks of the river Meon
  • A 15-minute walk to the South Downs Way
  • Toilets, communal area, washing-up area and firepit
Green hills, a gently sloping valley, a chalk-bed river and some friendly local cows – if you fancy waking up to views like these on your next trip, make tracks for Meonside Camping, a Hampshire site 10 minutes' drive from Petersfield. This site is particularly well set up for walkers and cyclists: it's right next to the East Hampshire Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty cycle route and an easy 15-minute stroll from the popular South Downs Way. More scenic surrounds are on hand in and around the South Downs National Park: head 20 minutes down the road by car for picnics at Queen Elizabeth Country Park or spectacular views at Beacon Hill Nature Reserve. Meonside Camping is a working farm, so there's plenty of animal and plant life on display here throughout the year. Guests at this back-to-basics site have access to well-kept facilities including toilets, a firepit, drinking water, communal seating and a washing-up area. The folk in charge of this place like to keep things on the quiet side, so guest numbers are kept low to ensure plenty of space and peace and quiet for all. If you fancy cooking over coals, set up a barbecue and get sizzling (barbecue meat packs can be ordered ahead and delivered on the night – use the special requests box to find out more and order). Meanwhile, those who feel like leaving the meal prep to someone else can head off to East Meon, a 15-minute stroll away, for great pub grub at one of two local boozers.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Very peaceful and spacious. Great views. Toilets were kept clean. We saw lots of stars once the sun went down! We even heard a few owls during the night and woke up to a beautiful morning chorus.

Disliked: Ground isn't completely flat in some areas but we easily found somewhere to pitch. Would be nice to have more than 1 sink so people can wash their hands while others are washing up.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Very nice and reasonable guy cheap fire wood readily available and great for dogs

Disliked: Not Sectioning pitches as 1 big group turned up and blocked route to water toilets and sink one side meaning all tents along one side had to walk around there camp area meaning kids would trip and get caught in guy lines and other items from there site rather that being in a orderly line accross the external boundary allowing general campsite etiquette and could do with showers

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: An amazing campsite, amazing people who run it who are also so friendly and polite. This is my second time coming back and will be there much more next year and can’t wait to come back! Lovley and peaceful, saw a few animals on our walk and it’s just a lovely campsite. Very clean toilets and a lovely gentleman who comes round at night with logs for fire! My brothers and sisters first time camping and they absolutely loved it!! Thank you!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We had a lovely 2 night stay(me, hubby, son and dog) If you want back to basics camping then this is the place for you! Beautiful surroundings, lovely owners, greeted with a smile and friendly chat, field kept clean and tidy and toliets cleaned daily. Owners would come round daily checking people in and checked we were okay, and to offer fire wood. There is a little village shop which takes about 15 minutes to get to.

Disliked: Nothing, absolutely beautiful stay and will be back again! Thank you! One little suggestion, if possible having a nother sink or a separate one for just washing your hands after using the toilet? I found there always to be a que of people doing their washing up and was unable to wash my hands( had to wait till i got back to my tent)

Local attractions

The farmers here are mindful about their impact on the local area and do all that they can to keep the valley as natural as possible. Guests who want to learn more about caring for the land should make tracks to the local sustainability centre (30 minutes' walk) and try their hand at bushcraft or permaculture. Still want more? Further agricultural techniques are on show at Butser Ancient Farm (10 minutes' drive) and Weald & Downland Living Museum (35 minutes). All the walking, cycling and foraging you're bound to get up to hereabouts being thirsty work, you may find yourself hankering for a restorative glass of vino. Head to Hambledon Vineyard (10 minutes) if you're curious about trying a glass of top-notch sparkling English wine. Beer-drinking guests, meanwhile, may well want to check out the cask-conditioned real ales made at Langham Brewery (30 minutes). For a really wild day out, head to Marwell Zoo (30 minutes), or try Birdworld (30 minutes) for some avian adventure. Eagle-eyed visitors researching the area may also have spotted that this site is within easy reach of West Sussex Falconry (25 minutes).
