Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The location is beautiful, we picked a really quiet weekend, there was only one other tent there the whole time! The facilities are clean and showers are hot. The grass is the perfect length. It was a shame the shop wasn’t open but I guess with barely anyone there it’s not worth opening and there are local shops and a garage very close by. We enjoyed a lovely weekend here.

Disliked: The fox that plagued us every night while we sat around the camp fire. Nothing is safe so make sure you put absolutely everything inside your tent when you go to bed, even anti bacterial wipes are a tasty treat apparently.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Having the Watercress line literally on your doorstep. The views were spectacular and the site in general is a lovely little spot. The cleaner in the evenings did an absolutely fantastic job in cleaning the shower and toilet facilities considering she had a pretty tough job!!

Disliked: That campsite users have to share toilet and shower facilities with the public. Makes it feel like you have to rush about early in the morning to get yourself washed etc. Also toilets became extremely busy and untidy at times. Also disliked that the public were able to access the campsite and have free reign to have picnics etc

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely location, nice pitches, fantastic toilets, showers and wash up facilities.

Disliked: Supposed to be a dog free site, but a family had two dogs running up and down the pitches chasing balls when we were trying to set up, then another person walking his dog on the second day….

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Excellent site, great pitches, really nice location, washing up, toilet and shower facilities are all top notch! Deffo coming back to camp here again!

Disliked: Only sight dislike was the wooden steps leading down the slope from the pitch need a little tlc, slippery wooden steps when it rained and a bit of a depression behind the steps starting to form, nothing major though.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Location was perfect for myself and my teenage son, gorgeous views over the countryside and sounds of the wildlife and the watercress line steam and diesel locos right next door for my son. Toilets and shower block was clean and well stocked as well as the washing up area, good lighting on the paths after dusk. Good local information was displayed. The first of our many visits I feel, to this gem of a place

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Good campsite, good location. Excellent toilet block with hot showers.

Disliked: No-one available at check in, did not pick up the phone. Just assumed where I could camp and pitched. I had no contact with any site owner all weekend, which is fine if there were some instructions emailed or available on site. No working water taps and none of the washing up taps worked. I had to wash up and get water from the bathroom sinks which was not ideal. Probably great in summer but if it is open all year round then basic provision like a water tap and wash up station should be available.

Local attractions

Puff along on the Watercress Line or walk along the River Itchen to sightsee at Georgian New Alresford, or go in the other direction along the 10-mile route to its other terminus Alton, home of historic buildings, art gallery and the Curtis Museum. The ancient market town of Petersfield is about five miles to the east of Watercress: head here for markets, museums and scenic walks/pedals into the South Downs (Petersfield is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is in the South Downs National Park and on the South Downs Way). Winchester and its museum and castle is about 10 miles away: if the kids aren’t suitably awed by the 900-year-old cathedral (tsk), take them to Marwell Wildlife at Owslebury near the city to marvel at the 1,200 or so-strong menagerie of animals from all over the world, or to the simply super INTECH Science Centre and Planetarium on Winchester’s Morn Hill.
