Endless explores are to be had in Essex, as anyone who’s had the privilege of staying at Pretoria Caravan Park is sure to tell you: this site 15 minutes’ drive from the village of St Osyth is prime for pootling around the English county’s coast… Just outside the chalets and caravans is Point Clear Beach, a sandy sweep of coastline for swimming and boating; if you’ve got a vessel, cross the creek to Brightlingsea Beach from here, where an open-air public swimming pool can be splashed in if the sea’s looking a touch too chilly for swims…) St Osyth down the road is a historic village with plenty to see and do: start off with the Priory, a 12th-century landmark, then set off along the seawall towards Clacton-on-Sea for a bag of fish and chips as a precursor to a stick of rock at the Victorian pier chockfull of amusements and fairground rides. For times spent in Britain’s oldest town on record, Colchester – that of the famed zoo adored by small sorts – is 40 minutes away by car, while the kid-friendly seaside rides of Adventure Island are an hour and a half down the coast. On your way, nosey about Martello Tower – an hour and 20 mins from the park – to swot up on Britain's place in the Napoleonic Wars.
