Got your sights on the 2020 Olympics? Put in some practice at Hadleigh Park. This comfy spot amid a forested country park in Essex has some history to it. In 2012, its 18km of trails were the venue for the Olympic mountain biking heats, with gold medals won by the Czech Republic and France; pedal in their tracks and who knows? Maybe you’ll end up on that podium. It’s tough work, Olympic biking but handily the team at Essex Glamping have worked hard to set up a top-notch comfortable spot to stay. Soft beds and sofas inside, outdoor verandahs with firepits to enjoy the peace of the forest park and grill your bangers alfresco. (Eat out the café if you prefer.) They’ve struck a fine balance between home comforts and the purpose of being out in the countryside: there’s solar lighting and cold water to collect from a tap but otherwise, it’s you and the outdoors, off-grid. (Washrooms with hot showers being one welcome exception.) If you’ve less of a penchant for pedal power, there are fine trails to walk round the park, a favourite being the one to 13th-century Hadleigh Castle ruin, looking out onto the Thames Estuary. If you’re more into watery antics, there’s kayaking and paddleboarding on the reservoir, and the fishing lakes are brimming with bream and carp, tench, roach and pike. For fish battered and fried, along with other edibles, it's a 10-minute walk to the shops and eateries of Hadleigh.

Local attractions

Those seeking sand and sea should head 20 minutes to Canvey Island for peaceful walks and views, or 25 minutes to Southend-on-Sea for the full-on day out experience involving thrill rides at Adventure Island, pier walks, jellied eels and sandcastles or boat cruises to the strange wartime Maunsell Forts marooned out at sea. A little further round the coast at Shoebury (half an hour), try kite-surfing on East Beach, or get your boots on to explore the almost deserted wilderness of the Dengie National Nature Reserve (an hour); empty it may seem but this coastal area is teeming with birds and home to a colony of seals whose red colouring occurs nowhere else in the world. (The only way is Essex, eh?) For trainspotters and steam buffs, the Mangapps Railway Museum (40 minutes) has a staggering collection of locomotive artefacts and runs steam and diesel rides on heritage trains, along a 10-minute trip to Old Heath. You can also catch bigger, modern trains from the station at Leigh-on-Sea (10 minutes) for a 45-minute trip to the sights and shops of London.
