Barney power optional grass tent or campervan campsite

Liked: My sister and i loved this little place. We were the only ones there. (Tuesday) it is as close to wild camping as they come. Eco friendly compost toilet and sink for fresh water available. We were surrounded by chickens however the Cockerells did not wake us . The owners are very helpful. We will go again on a quiet week day . Phone coverage 4g was working fine

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Lovely camp side with a nice pitches you are welcome to pick your own. You can buy eggs from chickens you will pass every day. Good for walking paths and near to the village. On arrival we got straw to even out the floor before pitching the tent . That was really cool. Compost toilet with tadpoles swimming in the tank near by. Great view on the side from it. No shower facilities but there is a sink and hot water in the pot most of the times really so no problem. This part is very windy so please remember to get good clothing and all the pegs for tent.

Disliked: The only thing is that you need to remember that on Sunday there is NO bus service and it is a very very very long walk to the station lucky Ted&Elizabeth gave us a lift to the Wickford station as there were going out. No taxi service either .

Fenced Paddock primitive grass and earth tent campsite (fire ring)

Liked: Beautiful setting with a true wild camp feel. Short distance to a couple of fun beaches. Friendly couple that run the place. Goats and chickens everywhere was fun for the kids. Nice to have a fire pit by the tent. Really nice stay.

Disliked: There is not much to do in the area but that just means it's perfect for a quiet and relaxing stay instead of an activity filled one

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: This is a lovely site which will bring you back in touch with nature. A nice quiet area with sounds only of nature. The chickens and goats are a great selling point as it really ties into the experience. The owners are both very welcoming and willing to help out if needed. We also got some lovely eggs from the chickens on site. 🐓 The toilet is as you’d expect for a compost toilet, it is kept very well looked after and stocked up with necessities.

Local attractions

Spreading between the estuaries of the River Blackwater and the River Crouch is Dengie National Nature Reserve (five minutes’ drive). This expansive area of tidal flats and saltmarshes is a birdwatcher’s dream, with large numbers of Brent geese and grey plovers, plus turnstones and oystercatchers. For a vintage day out, take a trip on a steam or diesel train along the heritage Mangapps Railway (25 minutes). In addition to just under a mile of standard-gauge track with restored stations and period equipment, there is a museum with an extensive signalling collection – it should keep trainspotters happy for a few hours. Bradwell beach (half an hour's walk) is a splendid place for a picnic on the sand or a walk along the nature trail. At the other side of the peninsula, Burnham-on-Crouch (20 minutes' drive) is a quiet riverside town with an art trail, a museum and some lovely places to eat and drink by the water. You may also like to stop by at Clayhill Vineyard, a little way outside the town, for a tour, a tasting or a bite to eat.
