  • Secluded site at Othona Community, close to Dengie Peninsula beaches
  • A 30-minute drive from Maldon; Bradwell-on-Sea 10 minutes
  • Woodlands to roam and direct access to the beach for birdwatching
A gorgeous 18 acres of woodland gardens, backed by spectacular Blackwater Estuary views: remote Coastal Park Camping certainly has quite the location, out in the Essex countryside within the open Christian Othona Community, set up in 1946 near Bradwell-on-Sea. Life here revolves around nature; there’s direct access to Dengie Peninsula beaches for peaceful walks in bracing sea air. Head to the salt marshes in Bradwell Shell Bank Nature Reserve and you might be lucky enough to spot oystercatchers, plovers and even the occasional (very rare) hen harrier. Badgers live in the grounds while seals sometimes pop up on the beach – and thanks to the lack of light pollution in these parts, you won’t need a telescope to glimpse the Milky Way on clear nights. Out and about, there's plenty to do nearby. Discover ancient churches or spend the day nosing around historic towns. Get active on the golf course, take sailing lessons along the Crouch river or go island-hopping by bike (luckily, it’s very flat round here). On your way back to base, stop off at Bradwell-on-Sea's community shop to pick up supplies and spark up a barbecue (bring your own equipment) when you get back. A handful of traditional pubs (all exposed beams and log fires) within 15 minutes’ drive if you fancy a change of scenery.

Local attractions

Birdwatchers, you’ve come to the right place. The salt marshes of the Dengie Peninsula (30 minutes’ stroll) are a haven for waders like herons and egrets, and other overwintering residents include Brent geese, godwits and short-eared owls. From the campsite, you can walk to the Saxon Chapel of St-Peter-on-the-Wall in 30 minutes. Built in the seventh century, it’s still open for occasional services. Lovely riverside Maldon (35 minutes’ drive) is even older, with Roman origins and today packed with history museums in timber-framed houses (there are plenty of riverside pubs for cheeky alfresco lunches too). The sea plays an important part in local life. You can potter about on boats from the Blackwater Waterside, join a charter from Bradwell-on-Sea (both 10 minutes) or learn to sail from Burnham-on-Crouch marina (30 minutes). Back on dry land (well, almost), the islands of Northey (40 minutes) and Osea (50 minutes) are suitably flat for gentle family bike rides.
