  • Adults-only site surrounded by 30 acres of peaceful parkland
  • A 10-minute drive to Audley End House and Gardens; Cambridge 35 minute
  • Within walking distance of village pubs, farm shops and cafés
Hello, 30 acres of peaceful parkland and goodbye noisy kids… Debden Park is an adults-only site with grass parklands and a quiet location in Essex with views over Debden Lake. With running water and an Elsan point, all folk who set down here are in for a peaceful getaway. There’s a public footpath that goes from Debden Park to the villages of Debden, Widdington and Newport. With each route taking around half an hour or so (avoiding the roads) and the end destinations having at least one excellent pub, this is bound to keep you quite occupied. For hot brews, cakes and the likes, there are cafés within half an hour’s walk of the site and for fresh farm eats, there are many farm shops around too (including one 40 minutes’ walk away). The site has direct road access, making it easy to get out to historical properties such as Audley End House and Gardens (10 minutes’ drive) or to Cambridge (35 minutes) for grand architecture, bookshops and river punting activities. Debden Park has views of (not access to) the lake. It runs a farm with horses, sheep and pheasants, so dogs are welcome (on leads) by special request only.

Liked: Clean, not too many people, could chose our own spot. Owners come over to chat. As a first time camper this was perfect.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: It was advertised as no facilities but there were a pair of porta loos which were spotless . Very quiet and a nice location and a nice outlook across the fields. Lyn was very friendly and gave accurate local advice.

Disliked: Would have benefited from the grass being mowed. If you are travelling to the concerts in the area there are only a couple of Ubers serving the whole area and with the site being in the middle of nowhere it’s a v long walk back, my advice….designate a driver and pay for the parking as it will cost less than a taxi ( some were charging £60 for an 8 minute drive)

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Detailed instructions on how to get to site. Number to contact site manager was useful and enabled us to update ETA. Friendly and helpful onsite manager.

Disliked: Lack of shower facilities and portable loos were a bit smelly (blue stuff perhaps needed changing). Cost of taxis to and from concert.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: This is a basic pop up site - with 2 portaloos, a water standpipe and rubbish bins, all of which are well set up and super clean. I do not understand why anyone has rated facilities low and disliked lack of showers - if you want those then don't book this site! Lynn (warden) was super friendly and helpful both on text when making the booking and when we arrived. She also gave suggestions of footpaths and eateries. We had fish and chips from Wrights in Saffron Walden and woud recommend. We cycled to a concert at Audley End (took about 45 mins at a leisurely pace) - this avoided the nightmare of trying to book a Taxi and the horrendous car park congestion - the night we went people reported still being stuck waiting to get off the car park at midnight (we were tucked up in our caravan!). Don't attempt this without good lights, as country lane with no footpath for last mile and half. Others have mentioned plane noise - we didn't find this to be an issue at all.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Extremely friendly owner, clear concise directions, generous pitch, toilets with working taps.

Disliked: Would like there to be a little marker light where the toilets are located so can be found in the dark, but that's a minor inconvenience on my part and a preference, certainly not a detrimental issue.

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely host Lynn with lots of info. Lovely views of the fields & woods A great stay for a few nights if you don’t need electric hookup as it’s just a farmers field. 2 portaloo kept very clean & fresh water & bins. Great for visiting Audley end for concerts or the lovely surrounding areas. We really enjoyed our nights stay. Only open for about 10 weeks every year as a pop up stay, when the concerts at Audley end are on.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: This was a cheap option for accommodation close to audley end house, for the heritage live concert. We paid online, and communicated with the owner, via text, re our estimated arrival time - didn’t have to check in. We were informed that this was a pop up site, and was literally a large field with a water supply and a couple of portaloos, hence the lowish rating. Lovely setting. A long walk to the concert, but most other people on the site were also going, so we were offered a lift! Perfect choice for our needs on this occasion

Disliked: No showers or any other facilities, but this kept the price down.

Route directions

Please note that the site should be accessed from Newport because turning into the site is easier coming from the Newport side due to the angle. Turn onto Debden Road, travel for just over one mile and on the sharp left-hand bend where you see the black and white chevron road sign, Debden Park is immediately on the right.
