  • Family-friendly farm site in the High Weald with lake and woodlands
  • A 35-minute drive to Eastbourne and Hastings; 50 minutes to Brighton
  • Communal fridge and launderette on site; pub 15 minutes' walk
To set out on an idle walk among the fruit and nut orchard or to follow a bridlepath into the medieval landscapes of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty? Walkers are certainly spoilt for choice at Sheherezade Fruit Farm in the East Sussex countryside. Prepare your walking boots for this family-friendly farm site where you can unwind with an on-site lakeside picnic packed with farm-made jams and chutneys, sip on fresh fruit juices, or set off into the surrounding woodlands and lanes towards local fishing lakes and country villages. Don't worry about soggy meals here if the weather is amiss, as the facilities include a fully-equipped kitchen with table and chairs where guests can eat their meals under cover. The site is within 35 minutes’ drive of Eastbourne and Hastings, and with Newhaven port 40 minutes away for links to France via ferry. If you weren’t a foodie before you arrived, you’ll surely be upon your departure. Prefer your mornings sunny side up? Order fresh eggs from the site and for any other supplies, head to the bigger supermarkets in Hailsham and Heathfield, which are within 15 minutes’ drive of the site. Back on site, the resident pigs, sheep and hens await with a cheery welcome home. Once you've greeted them, keep your food fresh in the communal fridge and make use of the other facilities on site, including wifi, launderette, showers and toilets. If you still have room in your stomach, there’s a pub within 15 minutes’ walk, with a pub garden for dogs (welcome on site on a lead) or cosy beamed innards to nurse a pint.

Power optional grass campervan campsite

Liked: Truly breathtaking surroundings, surrounded by nature. Both mornings we stayed, we were greeted by birdsong and sheep amidst the mist over the field - quite a beautiful sight to behold! We met pigs, chickens, plenty of sheep, the guard geese and Rupert the golden retriever. Walks around the lake followed by a lakeside beer as the sun is setting is unbeatable. A pub serving food is a 15 minute walk away, next door to a village shop selling local produce. The communal facilities were clean and even included an oven and a toaster. Make sure you pick up one of Carol’s homemade jams too!

Liked: Het onthaal. Wat een lieve gastvrouw.

Disliked: Pitch in een schapenweide en dus met de nodige keutels. Aangevallen en gebeten door twee loslopende ganzen. Deze horen echt wel opgesloten te zijn als er gaste´ logere´

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: This is a really lovely and peaceful site. We pitched our van by the beautiful lake but there is also plenty of space in the main field or adjacent to the woods. There is a well equipped kitchen, 2x principal toilet/shower room - a few hundred yards walk from the lake but through fields with views ( some people drove up). Carol who runs the site is lovely and very welcoming. Definitely recommend and will stay again.

Power optional grass campervan campsite

Liked: The environment

Disliked: The geese were aggressive and bit my wife. The facilities, whilst clean, were very basic. Signage to the site itself is extremely poor.

From the manager: Well, there is no pleasing some people is there?? Everybody was told about everything in an email before they arrived and there are portaloos near the lake. 9.9 people out of 10 have said the facilities are outstanding so I really don't know what else I can do other than go and hide under a stone. Shame they have spelt my name wrong!!!!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Carol is a fantastic host and made me really comfortable. She adjusted the pitch plans to suit my van and me. The campsite is a delight with loads of farm animals and fields leading down to a lake and a sense of wild camping, Firepits made for a great camping feel. Not crowded as the fields are huge.

Disliked: There's nothing to dislike the place is a delight as is Carol.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Nice location by the lake which was good for groups

Disliked: Very wild camping. Easy to miss this campsite as there is no clear signs on the road. Facilities in the bottom field are not what we expected, there is no access to water, washing up facilities and only 2 portaloos in the bottom field. The main toilet block and water which is advertised is two fields away. The Track from the entrance to the bottom field can get very slippy and muddy which makes access tricky in wet weather.

From the manager: I have now had three bad reviews from this past weekend and it is obvious that these are tainted by the bad weather on Saturday and Sunday morning. I cannot see how I can be held to blame for this and most of these campers actually booked at the last minute, clearly because the weather, this year, has been so unpredictable. It really doesn't help when I spoke with everyone on Sunday morning and asked them if they could stay a bit longer to let the ground dry out and some completely ignored that. Somewhat of a misrepresentation to say this is Wild Camping. It most certainly is not.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Carole was lovely and very present should there be any issues. The morning view of the pond and the afternoon dragonflies were wonderful.

Disliked: It is quite a walk from the camping field to the toilet block - particularly if it is raining - really feel the site needs some more support closer to the camping section for famililies - that being said, most people seemed to be in campers which the site is absolutely perfect for.

From the manager: Everyone is told on arrival that they can camp wherever they like, however a choice is made by them to be near the lake. I should nit be given a bad review because of their personal choices.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: I came with my 13 y/o daughter and her friend. We were camped right by the river. it was fantastic. wonderful views, surrounded by nature; sheep, ducks, chicken ageese and massive pig, forests and streams. felt wonderfully remote, but yet still had great facilities. Could buy eggs and veg directly on site. I will without a doubt be back . Many thanks

Local attractions

Tread carefully over the grounds where Normans landed many years ago with a visit to Battle Abbey (20 minutes’ drive). Continue onto the battlefield itself or head into the town of Battle (20 minutes), where the memory of the Battle of Hastings remains. For more trips into times gone by, the well-preserved bricks and moats of Herstmonceux Castle (15 minutes) make a good contrast to the timeworn turrets of Pevensey Castle (20 minutes). Gaze up to the moon and stars… and discover a world of domes and telescopes at The Observatory Science Centre (15 minutes), where kids can gawp over the different planets. More wonders await, this time from the animal world, at the family-friendly themed rides at Drusillas Park (half an hour) or the barns and farm animals of Middle Farm (25 minutes). Cuddle up to more animals of the furry kind at Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare (25 minutes). Ready for some more hands-on action? Try the treetop courses at Go Ape Bedgebury (half an hour) or get into watersports at Bewl Water (35 minutes).
