Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Nice flat and very quiet site

Disliked: Toilet and shower block very tired and could do with a make over although plenty of hot water. No washbasins to shave or wash in, only the washing up sink. Goats chickens and a pony wondering around the site, may be to some peoples likes but the goat poo is not so good when stepped in. Take a torch as it’s very dark when walking to the loos at night and you need to miss the animal poo.

Yurt

Liked: Felt very private with a screened off area. Private decking, seating and use of a fire bowl. Surrounded by mature trees it felt as if we were in our own quiet spot of the world. The yurt had plenty of blankets which we used for additional warmth, easily fitted in the additional blow up beds (one double and a toddler size). Yurt had several lamps for the evening along with a kettle, toaster and mini fridge. We used the log burner on one night (logs can be purchased from owner) which was a nice touch and made it toasty. Yurt also had a plug in radiator which came in handy. It rained horrifically one of the days but the yurt was big enough to keep the kids occupied. Listening to the rain was beautiful and the viewing roof let in plenty of light. We were often visited by the chickens, which the children loved. The goats visited a few times. (Note keep yurt door closed or as owner advised place fire gate to block off entrance if you want to sit with the doors open) as one goat entered and got up to some eating mischief, we did learn from that moment and it’s now a memory that our kids will no doubt always fondly bring up. The owner was available if needed, he was very welcoming and I’d definitely revisit. Great spot to visit Rye, Bodium Castle etc Yes the paths get muddy when weather is poor but you’re not booking a hard surfaced hotel. The toilet block was always clean and water tap available. This is a quiet site to get away from it all. No wifi - then again that can be a blessing. We loved it.

Disliked: No dislikes

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Everything! The site is small and beautiful. Everything you could need and super helpful owners. 2 pubs in easy walking distance if you don’t fancy cooking. The facilities are spot on. It’s wonderfully peaceful and located perfectly for visits to Hastings, Rye, Pett Level etc. Having the animals around is fun for the kids, and it all makes for a lovely stay. We will return.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked: Other friendly, like-minded campers and lovely places to visit in and around Rye.

Disliked: Despite paying and receiving booking confirmation 4 days previously we received a last minute phonecall only 20 mins drive away from the site (with 2 days' activities planned in the area) to say the booking had only just been seen and so we did not have a pitch. Quite an anxious rest of drive and disorganised arrival process made what should have been an enjoyable relaxing process pretty stressful. The owner did try to accommodate us but other areas of rough grass we were offered were not really suitable (or what we had paid for!). Due to the kindness of other campers (thank you so much to Christine and Clive) we were able to stay but only by encroaching on their pitch/space and then having a camper van squash next to us for the two nights (their front wheel only about a foot or so from the end of our guy line and one of our tent doors). Not ideal. Felt overcrowded. Mix of vans and small tents in one tight area not really suitable. Some vans only stayed one night and were allocated flat, grassy, shady pitches more suitable for tents. Thought should be given to where people are allocated. Another tent was pitched blocking the walkway through from the small field to the facilities which was a hazard during the night and must have been intrusive for them having people squeeze past. We felt it was expensive for the experience. Had it not been for friendly accommodating neighbours we probably would not have stayed but having made plans, booked and paid with 2 days ahead of us finding a last minute alternative in the area on a Saturday in August was a daunting proposition. Because the site was so busy and overbooked we felt lucky to get a parking space in the car park. The camp's details are clearly out of date - there is no microbrewery within walking distance. We had hoped to visit - this was a selling point for picking this particular campsite. Websites/info clearly needs updating as far as local area is concerned and communication on booking process needs improving. By way of constructive feedback a bench or chairs would be useful for campers' use to wait for the washing up sink and/or showers to become available. Thought could be given to where vans/tents are allocated and perhaps separate vans into the larger field with space for them to manoeuvre

From the manager: Whilst we are sorry things didn't work out for you, as you can see from the other reviews here, your experience is a highly unusual one. It is also one entirely coloured and influenced by the fact that your booking was not seen by us until minutes before your arrival. That was unfortunate. We didn't know you were coming. So, as we were full, we just didn't have a pitch for you. It was the busiest Saturday of the year and we could, and in retrospect perhaps should, have found you another campsite. But, having been made aware of your circumstances and at your request, we did our best to accommodate you and identified what should have been a perfectly suitable 'emergency' pitch. Unfortunately, as you now tell us, albeit a little too late, it didn't work out as planned. A campervan pitched needlessly close to your tent when there would have been plenty of room for them to pitch well away from you. Had you brought this to our attention at the time we, on your behalf, would have happily asked the campervan to relocate more thoughtfully. Instead you appear to have decided to put up with the situation and, when the time has passed for us to do anything about it, have seen fit to write an unfair, and largely inaccurate, review. In particular, and crucially, it is not true that you received confirmation of your booking from us before your arrival. That you have decided to write as you have done is surprising to us as we went out of our way to help you in your predicament. You have concluded your unfair and largely inaccurate comments with what you present as constructive feedback, something we always welcome. Thank you.

Local attractions

Mosey on over to the Brede Steam Giants (35 minutes' walk) for a display of 35-feet steam engine pumps from times gone by (just check ahead to make sure it's open). Fans of mechanical contraptions may also want a go on The Kent & East Sussex Railway running through the Rother valley and stopping 15 minutes' walk away from the National Trust’s Bodiam Castle (15 minutes' drive). Rove over to Rye (15 minutes) for bicycle hire and more countryside explores on the cycle paths and lanes. Then, head to Battle (15 minutes) to visit the site of the famed Battle of Hastings in 1066. Meanwhile, Hastings – for seaside days and nightlife – is 20 minutes’ drive away; those who’d like to take to the water might well want dips here or could travel on to Camber Sands (25 minutes) to kitesurf.
