  • In the South Downs National Park, with fab views over local hills
  • A 10-minute drive from Lewes and 25 from central Brighton
  • Surrounded by several walking trails, including the South Downs Way
Tack a scenic side trip onto a Brighton break with a stay at Plumpton College, a star of a spot in the 800-hectare grounds of an agricultural college. At the eastern end of the South Downs National Park, with hillside views all around, it may be close to top towns like Lewes (10 minutes’ drive) but has the feel of being deep in the countryside. Wake up to green panoramas, then stroll out of the site and across the road to access the South Downs’ hundreds of miles’ worth of walking paths. Follow the flagship South Downs Way, then bound around Brighton’s streets and beach (25 minutes) or wander by the chalky white cliffs of the coast at the Seven Sisters Country Park (35 minutes’ drive). Spending on site is also fab: there are animals to admire as you stroll around and plenty of space for playing games and general running about. Each pitch is roomy, measuring 15m by 10m, and pleasingly flat (as a result of being set up on the college's sports field). A pub is a few minutes’ walk away for food (and drinks) on tap, or you can stay on site and whip up grub on the barbecue or campfire while chatting to your travel crew. Shower and toilet facilities have been upgraded for the 2021 season, and on Fridays and Saturdays the college's dining room is open for takeaway meals (particularly handy if you're in need of easy eats at the end of a long walk…) Dogs are also allowed at this family-friendly site, so no one gets left behind.

Local attractions

When you’re not heading for the hills around the site on South Downs strolls, look to the market town of Lewes for local things to do: this traditional spot has one of the UK’s oldest outdoor pools, along with a 16th-century castle and a handful of must-see museums. If you’re one for getting wet, you could also indulge in a bit of wild swimming in the Cuckmere River. Rather admire aquatic attractions than submerge yourself in them? Amble around the Arlington reservoir instead. For a complete change of scenery, get to Glyndebourne (20 minutes) for opera performances in a 600-year-old stately home, then make a beeline for Brighton and modern entertainment options, from comedy shows to nightclubbing. Swing by the Eastern-inspired pavilion as well – a building Queen Victoria referred to as ‘strange’ – and pull up a striped deckchair on the pebbly Brighton beach for a breather. If you’re up for more coastal explores, head to Seven Sisters Country Park and take on some of the clifftop walks, detouring to Drusillas Park along the way to see animals ranging from scarlet ibis to sloths. This is also Europe’s first Hello Kitty-themed attraction – purrfect news if you have any fans of the feline character in your family.
