  • Peaceful simple pitches at an East Sussex working farm
  • Half an hour's drive to south coast beaches and Bluebell Railway rides
  • Firepits to hire for campfires; village pub 20 minutes' walk away
You’ll be in for a true slice of country life on a stay at Heronsdale Farm Campsite – pitches at this East Sussex site are set up in a three-acre field that’s part of a working farm just outside the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As this is a working farm, it comes with all the trimmings like livestock and tractors – so while kids and well-behaved dogs are welcome, you’ll just need to keep a close eye on them. The camping field is a little bit away from the action though, and it’s pleasingly flat with wooded areas that offer a bit of shade and shelter. Life is nicely simple here, but all the essentials are provided – you’ll have access to compost toilets, hot showers, drinking water and waste disposal facilities. Campfire evenings are actively encouraged, with firepits to hire and logs for sale (you’ll just need to bring your own marshmallows…) If a country pub is also an essential for your break, you’re in luck – a 20-minute stroll across the fields gets you to the village of Waldron, where you may catch sight of the local cricket team in action on the green before you head into the village pub. Chiddingly and East Hoathly are both a couple of miles away for more pub options (and a village shop in the latter). The bigger town of Heathfield is 10 minutes’ drive away when you need a supermarket or a wider selection of shops.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Beautiful location, great walks straight from the site including a pub 20mins away. Pitch up where you like and so we weren't right next to others. Toilets and showers were really clean and that area incl washing up station was well set up and only slightly away from where you pitch. Host very helpful too.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Hosts were welcoming and very helpful with lots of recommendations on walks nearby. Lovely peaceful location, lots of walks from the site and a couple of country pubs within walking distance. Grounds were well maintained and lots of choices of places got pitch up! Facilities were really good, some of the cleanest compost toilets we have experienced!

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Great campsite where you can pitch up anywhere you like on nice level spots. Whether you like to stay under the trees or in the open, there is a spot for you. This is a very basic campsite so don't expect any luxuries apart from 2 compost toilets, 2 showers (with nice hot water) and a place to do your washing up. The facilities might be basic but they are very clean and well maintained. Don't expect power or wifi. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The campsite is the perfect starting spot for some nice hikes or visits to nearby touristic spots. All in all a campsite worth driving the extra mile for.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Lovely Location, beautiful outlook and immediate site environment, friendly.

Disliked: Not a severe dislike ( we would still go back) but we have used better composting toilets and at busy times with just 2 + a portaloo they were quite busy. It was quieter after the weekend and they were okay. We would have liked the option of increasing the water temperature on the covered outdoor showers

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Heronsdale campsite is wonderful. Very organised and tidy. I had pre-ordered logs and a fire pit and they were waiting for us when we arrived. The location is stunning. We had a lovely walk to a nearby pub. We saw a barn owl both evenings we were there around dusk.
