What customers say

This car-free campsite offers a tranquil, natural escape. Guests rave about spacious sites, clean restrooms, and the great cafe/shop. Friendly hosts & campfires are a plus. Downsides: long treks to facilities with gear, occasional long/wet grass, and noise/dog issues.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked How quiet it is with no cars moving
Fantastic space, far enough from the car park to make you realise you’re wild camping but not too far

Disliked Our only issue was there is someone who drives a quad bike to help drop people & stuff off (great idea!) however they go so fast through the woods, they almost ran my 4 year old over twice as they follow the same path as everyone else - it would be good if the quad bike used a different path

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Friendly staff, hot showers, magical ancient forest. The girls saw wild deer running through. Campers quiet after 11. Clean toilets. Farm animals, especially the pigs who run over to the fence to say hi.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We loved that you have to park your car away from the field so it is safe for children to play. The walk through the woods from the car park is peaceful :) showers were always hot and clean. Staff were really helpful and friendly.
Although it got busy on the Friday afternoon the field is large enough to not feel cramped at all.
The kids loved the rope swings in the adjacent woodland.
It is always wonderful having a real campfire and the honesty box for firewood is a great idea as it didn’t matter if we ran out as we could always get more.
Could pitch where you wanted to which was lovely.
Free WiFi at the shop and not great at the field which is just how I like it so we can properly go back to basics :)
We will definitely return!

Disliked No hot water for the washing up area but we heated ours up on the stove and used that instead.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked I camped solo for this. Very well organised. I quite liked the ‘no cars by tents’ rule. The café/shop is excellent and a great break for a decent coffee or ice cream treat. Surrounding woods (which you can walk in) are lovely. Lovely campsite owner Amanda.

Disliked Families being very very loud until
very late. Families arriving late into the evening on Friday (there needs to be an earlier cut-off time) pitched so close to me with their kids running over my guylines and making such a racquet with no control from parents. The same parents were having chats outside my tent at 2am. What’s wrong with people? This caused me to have the worst night of sleep I think Ive ever had camping (and I’ve camped a lot), which made me get up at 5am, pack up and leave Dernwood.
I know this isn’t Dernwood’s fault directly but it’s my real experience. If you’re a solo traveller and/or just want a quiet and calm camp, do not camp here Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
No light in the men’s toilets which is a bit frustrating but okay if you have a headtorch.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great campsite with fantastic woods. Just a few pitches for a very large area garantee a sense of quite, silence and relaxation in nature. There is a good degree of walking to reach facilities and water but it all fits very well together. The cafe and shop on site are excellent compliment to the landsxape. Excellent menu and deliciou meat. Well done!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked This car free campsite is in a stunningly beautiful setting, surrounded by bluebell woods. There is so much space you are completely undisturbed even when it's 'busy'.
The toilets are in a proper building which is lovely, no portaloo/rickety hut, and toilet paper and hand towels are supplied. There's even a washing up area which so handy.
The wonderful hot showers are back at the car park but the walk to them feels like being in a Disney movie so it's not a chore at all.
The welcome is warm and kind, as are the fires you're permitted to have.
There's just enough phone signal to stay in touch in case of emergency, which is perfect!
We had a wonderful time, we will be back.

From the manager: What a lovely review - thank you so much for taking the time to read this and even though you've left this anonymously I know who you are as i recogise my coffee pot :) I love the comment about the walk being like a disney movie - would you mind if I use this in my social media posts?!
Thanks again and hope to see you again this year xx

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We stayed at Dernwood Farm Wild Camping with our family, and it was one of the best camping experiences we’ve ever had! The place is truly special — set in a beautiful, wild woodland, far from noise and civilization. It’s perfect for anyone looking for peace, nature, and a true wild camping experience.

The facilities are excellent considering how natural the setting is — clean toilets, showers, the option to have a campfire, wood available on site.
The hosts are incredibly kind and helpful. Our children loved it, especially having the freedom to explore the forest.

A big bonus was the lovely on-site shop and coffee bar — a cosy spot with great coffee, local produce, and friendly atmosphere. It really added to the whole experience and made mornings even better!

We will definitely be back! Highly recommended for anyone seeking an authentic nature adventure.

Guests can bring a bike and head off down the Cuckoo Trail, 11 miles of former railway track converted into a wildlife-friendly green corridor running from Heathfield to Eastbourne Park. The surfaced path is great for ramblers and horse riders too. The moated splendour of Herstmonceux Castle (25 minutes' drive) is a sight to behold; take a tour of the interiors and the Elizabethan walled gardens before hitting the tea shop. Adjacent to the castle the Observatory Science Centre (combined tickets are available) with its domes, telescopes and hands-on fun. Also close to Dernwood is Bateman’s (25 minutes), the beautiful Jacobean home of Rudyard Kipling, preserved in its original splendour by the National Trust. If you need to entertain the kids, try bouncing about at Urban Jump Trampoline Park (10 minutes) or visiting the waterslides, petting zoo and owl sanctuary at Knockhatch Adventure Park (15 minutes).
