  • Off-grid site across 20 acres of woods and meadows in East Sussex
  • A 15-minute drive from central Hastings and Pett Level beach
  • Firepits provided, plus hammocks, rope swings and woodland trails
Woods and meadows sounds like a pretty good combination, right? And in fact it gets even better when you throw in coast too, as you can at Pop-Up Woods and Meadows Campsite, spread over 20 acres of East Sussex countryside in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As the name suggests, this spacious site is made up of three separate meadows with woodland attached – and guests are welcome to choose whichever they prefer for their stay. There are plenty of lovely little corners to choose from, catering for groups, families and individuals looking for a nature-filled off-grid place to stay. This is a site that’s been set up to make the most of the rural peace and quiet – it’s got a no-music policy and it’s kept car-free too. You’ll walk along trackways to find pitches cut into the meadow grass or hidden away in the woods – if you’ve got too much kit to carry, a bell-hop service can give you a hand. The general vibe here is one of wild camping, but you’ll be able to use the firepits provided along with washing-up buckets, compost toilets and showers. Hammocks, rope swings, cargo nets and a geocache animal trail all make life in the woods even more enticing. And what of the coastal aspect? Well, the site is about 15 minutes’ drive from the centre of Hastings and Pett Level beach, a great choice for family days out with an ice cream van, lots of space to play and sheltered waters for swims or paddleboarding. Rye and Camber Sands are other options down by the sea, and elsewhere nearby are walks galore, castles, vineyards, historic houses…

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Space was lovely and close to local town.

Disliked: I thought the pitch was slightly more expensive than others we had been to. We usually pay around £35pn. This site was £55pn. We found one of the owners rude. We stayed for 2 nights during the week and the website said reception closes at 8pm. We were arriving after work and received a phone call to check we were still arriving. The lady was very kind and explained that if it was a quieter night they like to head off at 6pm. She explained it wasn't a problem to arrive at site after this time. The second night, my husband walked up to reception at 7.30pm to ask for some logs. The gentleman was rude and made a comment that people cannot read signs. There were no signs around camp to state they shut at 6pm. Only 8pm. We just felt there were nicer ways to speak to customers.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Super friendly host, Sky. Lovely surroundings and very peaceful. Once the new market garden is finished and new sapling trees have grown this site (pitch that I was on) will be stunning. Very enjoyable 2 night stay.

Disliked: Having to leave the car away from the pitch site. However, this made it feel safer for the kids to run around without concern.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Looking for a place close to nature in the region? Then look no further! We love wild camping. Very spacious pitches. You choose the pitch you like. Tent camping in the forest area. Vans set up camp in the natural meadows. We had a marvellous spot by a small stream and under shady trees. No neighbours in sight - and that in the high season. Unfortunately, we arrived late at the campsite and were delighted to be greeted personally and warmly. We can warmly recommend the lovely place to everyone!!!

Disliked: absolutly nothing

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We had a great time, Stacey’s for 3 nights, pitches are really big and spacious, great woodland and loves the ducks and of course John the cockerel. Welcomed by the lovely Skye and met the rest of the crew who always had time for a quick chat and nothing was too much. Lots of lovely woodland which was nice and cool in the heat, lots of ripe swings hammocks for the kids
