  • Well-equipped shepherd’s hut on peaceful Sussex farmland near Hailsham
  • A 40-minute drive to Ashdown Forest, and 25 minutes to Glyndebourne
  • Kitchen corner and convertible sofa bed; farm shop 10 minutes’ walk
Located in a quiet backwater near Hailsham in rural East Sussex, the glamping accommodation at Springham Farm is in a jaunty shepherd’s hut. It’s just the job for couples looking for a peaceful stay as well as the chance for country rambles, easy access to south-coast beaches and (hopefully) stargazing on clear nights. Sheppy the shepherd’s hut has a clever layout with pots, pans, a kettle and hob in the kitchen corner, a compact dining area and a bed that doubles as a sofa for daytime use. Guests should stay toasty warm no matter what the weather, thanks to the woodburner, and there are piles of books on hand if you feel like having a lazy day. Despite the peaceful setting, there are ample amenities nearby, including a farm shop 10 minutes’ walk away for stocking up on local beers, ciders, cheeses and meat. Hailsham is 10 minutes’ drive away, with supermarkets for all essentials as well as pubs and takeaways. Run on bio-dynamic lines, Springham Farm is focused on regenerative farming and re-wilding, and guests are more than welcome to explore its hidden corners, walk along the River Cuckmere and admire the East Sussex views (particularly lovely at sunrise, if you’re ever up that early).

Local attractions

Walking and cycling choices are endless in this neck of the woods. Grab the walking boots and make for the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (10 minutes’ drive) for hikes along former Saxon drovers’ lanes and through ancient woodland, or walk the open heathland of Ashdown Forest (40 minutes) to see the landscapes that inspired the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. If you’re craving bracing sea air, head for Pevensey Bay (20 minutes) for long walks along the shingle, or plump for Eastbourne (half an hour), where you can splash around in shallow waves, promenade along the pier or play a golf on one of several links courses. As well as having a beach, Bexhill-on-Sea (25 minutes) is a smart destination for the odd rainy day, with vintage cars and fashions displayed at Bexhill Museum, and contemporary art exhibitions and concerts at the modernist De La Warr Pavilion. On a cultural mission? Opera fans can book tickets for world-class opera at Glyndebourne (25 minutes), and there are frequent craft workshops at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft (45 minutes), where icons of modern design are displayed, including London Underground signs and sculpture by Eric Gill.
