Bell tents on wooden decking

  • Luxury bell tents at an East Sussex family farm a mile from Battle
  • A 20-minute drive to historic Hastings; 25 minutes to Rye
  • Private bathroom and firepit for each tent; breakfast hampers to order
Perhaps you’ll follow the fairy trail through the grounds, or spot some deer and their fawns in the woods as the sun sets. Maybe you’ll see a buzzard flying overhead as you eat breakfast, or be treated to a shimmering display of stars in the sky while you cuddle up by the campfire… Either way, there should be plenty of special moments to experience at Lower Gate Glamping. This East Sussex farm location has been in the same family for over 50 years, and current owners Alan and Marian have now chosen to invite guests to share in this lovely rural spot. Not only that – they’ve set up the bell tents in one of their favourite spots around the 24-acre property. The bell tent paddock is very secluded and private, with lovely views all around and plenty of chances to spot wildlife. You’re also welcome to take a stroll around the rest of the grounds, taking in the woods, the stream and the gardens looking out over the Netherfield valley. A lot of effort has gone into making these tents cosy and comfortable – each one is kitted out with a kingsize bed (with luxury bedding and a stack of blankets), two single pull-out futons and a stove for cooking or warming up. Tea, coffee, a fridge and a solar charging pack are included too, and each tent has its own bathroom with a hot shower and compost toilet. Each tent is set up on a wooden deck that’s got a gas barbecue, a firepit (with a basket of logs) and a table and chairs; breakfast hampers can be added to your booking and other bits can be bought at the shops in Battle, five minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Your first outing should probably be to Battle (five minutes’ drive), to visit the abbey and the site of the 1066 Battle of Hastings. After that, there are plenty more historic places to visit nearby, including Hastings itself (20 minutes), Rudyard Kipling’s former home Bateman’s (20 minutes) and the romantic moated Scotney Castle (half an hour). While you’re down at the coast you might also like to poke around at the indie shops in Rye (25 minutes) or hit the beach at Camber Sands (35 minutes). If you’re more in the mood for a garden visit, set off instead for Sissinghurst Castle Garden (35 minutes), created by Vita Sackville-West. If you’ve got kids with you, good days out might include the various activities of Knockhatch Adventure Park (35 minutes) or the animals and play areas at Drusillas Park (40 minutes). There are lots of outdoor activities for all ages at Bewl Water (half an hour) as well.
