  • Peaceful, isolated site on a secluded Lancashire farm
  • A half-hour drive from Blackpool beach and Forest of Bowland
  • Simple grass pitches down a long farm track, 10 minutes from the M6
Oh to be on a peaceful, secluded spot in the lovely Lancashire countryside, with forests, the Lakes and big cities not far off… such is the atmosphere at Moss Rose Campsite, a relaxing site about 10 minutes’ drive from the M6 and half an hour north of Preston. This is a splendid spot for those who’d like a bit of peace and quiet – pitches are on a simple grass field well away from any neighbours. There are quiet hours between 10pm and 8am, with guests asked to reduce their noise levels from 9pm. You’ll have to travel down a long farm track to get here (it’s rather rough and bumpy, so take it slowly) but the reward is a spacious and secluded stay on a small traditional family-run working farm with views out over fields of farm animals. (The owners describe it as ‘somewhat alike to The Darling Buds of May’, for those who remember such telly treats.) Because of those farm animals, dogs are welcome as long as they are well behaved and kept under control. Kids are also very welcome, and you’re able to set up barbecues for your evening meal (as long as you’re careful with them…) There’s a pub a couple of miles away if you fancy a pint or a bite to eat. Day trips around here might take you to the coast at Blackpool or Morecambe, inland to the Forest of Bowland or Lake District or for a bit of city action in Liverpool or Manchester, both of which are a little over an hour’s drive away (also making this site also a good place for city dwellers who fancy a quick escape without a long drive).

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: This is a lovely quirky site. I’ve never seen anywhere else like it. A very friendly vibe especially as the owners are so lovely and attentive. Got a really organic feel to it. Very peaceful. Facilities are basic but do the job well enough. Play area best suited to young kids is visible from virtually every pitch.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Owners were very friendly and helpful on arrival. The site is well laid out and very relaxed where you can choose your pitch. There are limited but functioning facilities and a play area for kids. There’s also a small nature area to explore with the dog. Quiet site after dark.

Disliked: The approach road is a bit bumpy but passable. The toilet/shower facilities could be nicer. There’s nothing for miles around. There was a bit of noise from offsite during my stay from what sounded like boy racers exhausts and music.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We had a fab 3 night break at Moss Rose campsite. Joe, Kelly and family are really lovely warm, welcoming hosts who are a visible presence without being intrusive, they've got the balance just right. The pitches are a great size and well spaced apart with long grass in between each pitch giving a real sense of privacy. It was nice to stay on a site where the pitches aren't all crammed in and facing each other in a uniformed manner! The site had a very unique and natural/ wild feel to it, which we really loved and we spent a lot of the time just relaxing on our (very large) pitch listening to all the wildlife around us. We liked Stan's honesty shack and made use of that as well as buying a couple of ice creams from the refreshment shed after a local walk on a particularly hot day, over the weekend. There's also a shed with a brew machine, microwave, fridge freezer and even charging lockers! The toilets and shower (women's) were always clean and there was a washing up sink and fresh water outlet. We could not have asked for anything more and can't wait to re-visit! Thank you again to Joe and Kelly for your hospitality and local pub tips (as well as film recommendation - Beetlejuice!!)

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: What can I say about this lovely campsite which hasn’t already been said?! If there is such a thing as a happy place then for me this would be it. Getting back to nature. The owners are welcoming from the get go and nothing seems too much for them. They really do go out of their way to make sure you feel comfortable, happy and have everything you need. My kids have loved exploring the site and seeing the sheep who are super friendly. We were lucky enough to see wild deer and rabbits and loved hearing all sorts of animals at night time whilst enjoying some down time by the campfire. The pitches are a very generous size, spaced between tall grass which gives a more private feel. The facilities are kept clean and the honesty shack is always stocked with essentials and plenty of goodies. We love this site so much we are already planning on booking another visit before it gets too cold😊 Thank you for a lovely end to the summer holidays

Liked: We found Moss Ross campsite on pitch.com and only needed a campsite for 2 nights. We were absolutely gutted we wasn't staying for longer than that. What a beautiful, peaceful and friendly campsite. The owners are onsite throughout the day if you needed anything and are very friendly and helpful. It's everything you need for a campsite, facilities are cleaned regularly, sink for washing up, honesty sheds that a regularly stocked up with essential if you needed them. Even the sheep are friendly and love a good fuss 😅 We will definitely be coming back here for a longer stay ⛺️ 🐑 ☀️

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Lovely small and friendly site. Love the set up and how the individual pitches were marked out. Will be even nicer when the wildflowers grow. Loved the honesty shacks where you could purchase snacks, drinks, ice lollies and loads more! Lockers with charging points were a brilliant idea.

Disliked: Small toilet and shower block but the owners are in the process of building a bigger one.

Local attractions

Before you get straight to your adventuring, there’s a farm shop and ice cream parlour called Wallings Ice Cream (15 minutes' drive) that will make sure your tummy’s well prepared for all the action. For action, the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (half an hour) is just the place - have a pedal between rural villages, picking up farm produce as you go. The Lake District National Park (45 minutes) has plenty more trails or watersports for those looking to get a dip in. But what about those city days out also? The bright lights of Blackpool (half an hour) are hardly far away, and for more sightseeing, Manchester (an hour and 10 minutes) and Liverpool (an hour and 15 minutes) make for some great day trips. If you’re a fan of the busy buzz and action Lancaster (half an hour) has museums and a city park or Morecambe (half an hour) has a splendid seafront… but for more wildlife instead, head to the Wild Discovery animal park (half an hour).
