  • Cosy traditional shepherd's hut in a private Lancashire field
  • Five miles to Forest of Bowland; a half-hour drive to Blackpool
  • Woodburning stove, private firepit and private eco toilet provided
It’s a cosy stay that’s on offer at Oaktree, where a shepherd's hut packed with character sits in a private field surrounded by lovely Lancashire countryside. Peer out of the window at the green scenery and you’d think you were in the middle of nowhere, but in fact it’s also very well connected, just off the A6 and with the M6 nearby too (and a bus stop just outside for jaunts by public transport). That means easy access to all sorts of days out, particularly if you’ve got your eye on walks in the Forest of Bowland, five miles away. As well as being rather well situated, this is a place where the folk in charge have thought of pretty much everything guests might need during their stay. The hut sleeps up to two adults in a double bed (four foot by five foot seven inches) and two small children (up to approximately the age of 14) in two bunks; it’s kept warm by a woodburning stove (with logs available too, of course). A private eco toilet is on hand too, as is a shelter for outdoor cooking and washing-up, and a large enclosed firepit area with seating. This is a place for you if you like to travel light: cutlery, glasses, tea towels, a disposable barbecue, cleaning kit and plenty of other bits and bobs are all provided, and there’s tea, coffee and sugar so you can have a refreshing cuppa on arrival. If you don’t fancy cooking, it’s handy to note there’s an Indian restaurant, a pub and an Italian restaurant/bar within a few minutes’ walk – and a tempting ice cream parlour just over the road. For more foodie options, head to the village pubs in Garstang or Scorton or scoot down to Preston (15 minutes’ drive) for more eateries and supermarkets. The owners have a variety of well-behaved owls that they usually take to schools, care homes and village shows. If you ask them, they can bring them down to the shepherd's hut for a close-up experience with three or four owls for half an hour.

Local attractions

If animals are the sort of thing that piques your interest, seek out boars, emus and all sorts of cool species at Bowland Wild Boar Park (half an hour’s drive). Elsewhere, the Owl & Bird of Prey Sanctuary (25 minutes) has flying displays and plenty of birdsong. You’re likely to spy some wildlife around the trails at Beacon Fell (15 minutes) or the Trough of Bowland (half an hour), where there are hill climbs on the cycling trails and a few loops for hikers. It's another splendid uphill climb to the fell at Nicky Nook trig point (15 minutes). After some classic entertainment too? Well, the theme park, water park and amusement piers in Blackpool (half an hour) have plenty of that, or there’s miniature golf, bowling and a cinema in the Flower Bowl Entertainment Centre (two minutes). For the history buffs though, book a look around the stately Samlesbury Hall (15 minutes) or find the pretty Stydd Gardens (25 minutes) and their tempting tea rooms in an ancient Roman town.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: We loved everything about our stay. The shepherds hut was cute and cosy. The grandchildren loved playing in the field on the toys provided. Close to shop and places to eat. Everything thought of that you could possibly need for your stay. The grandchildren never asked for iPads or phones once which is unheard off haha. Would highly recommend.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Everything. Small section of field out of sight and all to ourselves. Shepherds hut was clean and cosy and had all cooked utensils/lights and even a gas log fire. Outside was a very clean eco toilet which was close but nor too close, a large fire pit, cooking area which was sheltered along with another sheltered seating area. There was ball games for the kids. We was welcomed by Steve, who very helpful and gave great advice on the local area. We was close to pubs and restaurants. We loved it.
