Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site was excellent! We came as 2 families with young children camping. The field to camp in was an amazing size for the amount of pitches they allow…. plenty of space for the children to play without getting in other people’s way. The toilet and shower block was modern and cleaned regularly, and there was a picnic bench per pitch which was very useful! The staff were helpful, quick to respond to emails and very understanding when one of the children accidentally broke a section of the fence! The walking trails and den building areas were fantastic, and the overall setting itself is beautiful. The children (and adults) thoroughly enjoyed the wild boar park, especially seeing the baby meerkats, and the barrel ride!

Disliked: The little play park on site is great, although a little rickety. Could perhaps do with tightening up slightly.

Camping pod (pet friendly)

Liked: Fantastic campsite, loads to do for young kids at the animal park on site. Really clean facilities and friendly staff. Will definitely visit again.

Disliked: Only watch out is the pods are smaller than expected. There were 3 of us and we fit ok but I can’t see how 4 people could sleep in them.

Iron Age Roundhouse cabin (pet friendly)

Liked: Loved how unique the roundhouse is, as well as the privacy (you're not overlooked at all, in fact you have your own garden area, so feel safe to let the kids play). Great facilities were just opposite (toilets, showers, washing up areas), too. The accommodation is walking distance from the Wild Boar Park - we didn't have to drive down once, which was great. Most importantly, though, the staff are exceptional. Whether it's a warm welcome from the accommodation team, or knowing the park staff on a first name basis by day two, they really went out of their way to make our visit special and we are forever grateful. They really do go the extra mile and are the difference between "that was fun" and "when can we book to come back?!". I can not recommend them highly enough.

Disliked: This is less of a dislike and more of a prior warning for other people - the door is Iron Age sized, so if you're taller than about 4 foot, be prepared to bend or get scratched by the thatched roof!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Remote and a small campsite.

Disliked: Children were up until 11 pm shouting and screaming in the agacent glamping pod section even though it was supposed to be quiet hours after 10 pm and silence after 11 pm. Toilets were quite dirty and didn't look like they were cleaned at all in the 24 hours we were there. With only 3 toilets for the whole campsite, they need be cleaned at least twice a day. One toilet/shower didn't have a handle on the back of the door (just a lock) and I almost got trapped in there. Staff said they were planning to get one installed but it should really not have been in use without a handle. No washing up liquid at the washing up station.

Local attractions

There may be much to keep you at this wildlife park but family-friendly activities are all around the region too, with the rare breeds of cattle at Cobble Hey Farm & Gardens 25 minutes’ drive away and the rainy-day workshops and events at Barton Grange Garden Centre within half an hour. If it’s sunny, Brock Bottoms Picnic Site (25 minutes) is an excellent spot for an outdoor meal – followed up with an ice cream made courtesy of the milk from the dairy cows at Mrs Dowsons Farm half an hour away. Famous places for the kids are also within an hour’s drive, like the rides at the Blackpool seaside; for grownups, the fell walks of the Lake District are the same distance away.
