  • Back-to-basics, pop-up campsite on a Lancashire sheep and cattle farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Gawthorpe Hall and Pendle Heritage Centre
  • Wild camping on field pitches; walks on site; pub five minutes’ stroll
Escape to Pendle Witch Country for off-grid camping on a peaceful, second-generation family-run farm near Burnley in the Lancashire Pennines. Northwood Farm Campsite is a bewitching spot to reconnect with nature and relax. During the day you might spot deer, foxes and hares flitting about, and sometimes, as dusk falls bats swoop overhead and owls hoot goodnight. There are no set pitches, so turn up and pick your favourite spot. Wherever you choose to put up your tent, you’ll have views over ancient woodland or Gawthorpe Hall (a mini Downton Abbey). Eggs, local milk, bacon and sausages are available from the owners to cook up a breakfast fit for kings, and barbecues are allowed, but please use the stone slabs provided. The cows would like their field back in pristine condition. This is honest-to-goodness wild camping, with no electricity, wifi (there is mobile phone signal though) or showers. The site does have a communal picnic table and toilets, and you can borrow a wheelbarrow to get gear to your pitch down the farm track. Despite its remote and rural vibe, Northwood Farm Campsite is easy to get to, being only 10 minutes’ drive from junctions 8 or 13 of the M65. Travelling on public transport? There’s a bus stop at the end of the lane. You’ll find a playground for the kids in Higham village (five minutes’ walk) as well as a pub. A public footpath runs through the farm and the owners can provide more information on local walking routes.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Everything was perfect here for my little lads first wild camping trip. This site is as close to wild camping as possible without trekking for miles to find a good spot, but has a few amenities that are a nice touch (drinking water, soap, sink, toilet etc) The owners are very welcoming and couldn't do enough for us when we arrived. Alison even took the children to see the farm animals while I carried our gear and chose where to pitch which was very helpful. Log burners are supplied and firewood available which was a nice touch for some toasted marshmallows at night. Overall i couldn't fault a thing and am very glad we stayed. I have already recommended it to friends and family as it was a very good experience overall. We will also be returning when possible.
