  • Adults-only glamping in the south of the Lake District National Park
  • Five minutes' drive from Colton; Hawkshead 20 minutes
  • Furnished bell tents pitched 60 metres apart
Looking to mix it up a bit? Come to Cumbria, where wild camping meets glamping at this small-scale, secluded site in Lake District. Set on the edge of Rusland Moss National Nature Reserve and five minutes' drive from the hamlet of Colton, Wildlife Glamping is a peaceful spot where you'll be pitched up at least 60 metres from your nearest neighbour. The site's sturdy canvas bell tents sleep up to two guests, making it well-suited for couples' getaways. Things are very laidback and quiet here – something helped by the fact that this adults-only spot only caters for guests over the age of 18. These spacious tents measure three metres by five and come equipped with two single beds, two bean bags and a coffee table (please bring your own linen, bedding and pillows). All are set in peaceful meadows where wildflowers grow (depending on the season). All tents have a firepit outside with a trivet for cooking over. Wood is for sale on site – just contact the manager by phone and then call at the Old Vicarage if you need more. There's also a shared camp kitchen with two gas rings, a kettle, a sink and a covered food prep area, plus access to composting toilets and showers. Wildlife Glamping recommends packing insect repellant before heading here. Need to pick some up locally? The nearest pharmacy is in Hawkshead (20 minutes' drive).

Local attractions

Starting locally, take the time to explore the diverse and rare habitats on display at Rusland Moss National Nature Reserve (a few minutes' walk), where you can stroll along boardwalks in search of birdlife, red deer and rare invertebrates like the large heath butterfly. (You might also spot dormice, doves, frogs and newts here, depending on the hour you visit and on the time of year.) Next, you could take yourself off for woodland strolls in Grizedale Forest (20 minutes' drive), for wild swimming in the gorgeous (if somewhat chilly) waters of High Dam Tarn (15 minutes), or for fell walks overlooking Coniston Water (approximately half an hour). Want a chance of seeing ospreys catching fish? Head to Esthwaite Water (15 minutes) with your binoculars, or hire a boat for a laidback few hours on the water. Towns and villages worth visiting include Ulverston (20 minutes), home to the Laurel and Hardy Museum, and Grasmere (40 minutes), the long-term home of famed Romantic poet William Wordsworth. Wildlife Glamping is also just under 20 minutes from Hill Top in Sawrey, Beatrix Potter's well-preserved rural retreat.

Bell tent

Liked: what a fabulous place, loved the back to nature and the covered area was superb with the facilities. It's remote but this is just what you want to get away from all your stress in life. Next time I will bring a few more essentials to cook breakfast outside. I have been to places where Electric is in the tents but for one night was fine. Luck enough to see a small deer close to our tent in the early morning.

Bell tent

Liked: 99% tranquil, loads of space around pitch, lots of animal life, saw deer, bats, frogs, butterflies and other insects. Loos and kitchen were close but hidden well within the trees. Had a real fire going next to the tent to cook on and sit by, but there was also a gas stove in the kitchen area for when it rained. Maybe be aware: Quaker Hall over the road had a big weekend party for both nights we were there. We didn’t mind the music but it was loud enough to hear at the pitch.

Disliked: The boiler hot water wasn’t sign posted so we had cold showers at first. We spotted the screen/digital dial to turn it on by chance while using the stove. Look for a cut out in the wooden counter, left of the stove.
