  • Within the grounds of a pub at the edge of the Lake District
  • A 10-minute drive from Kendal and 20 from Lake Windermere
  • Bar, restaurant and play area; takeaway breakfast available
Pull up a pew at The Station Inn and reward yourself with a pint after loping around the Lake District – this site is part of a pub placed on the edge of the national park, so it’s a convenient spot for checking out all that Cumbria has to offer. A 10-minute drive from Kendal’s town centre, 20 minutes from Lake Windermere and the Yorkshire Dales, and half an hour from the Forest of Bowland, this simple pub site really is in a nifty position (it's particularly popular with folk tackling the coast to coast cycle route). Whether you’re in the area to amble around fells, take steamer trips across lakes, gaze at waterfalls or totter around teeny art galleries, all of the above is possible. Adventures are a breeze to organise too as tour operators in and around Kendal are on hand to take you hiking, rock climbing, cycling and canyoning in the surrounding countryside. Head back to base after days out for home-cooked dinners from the bistro-style menu in the restaurant, beers and wines in the bar or the outdoor seating area, and a chance for the kids to scamper around the huge play area until the no-noise policy kicks in at 10:30pm. The pub (in a farmhouse dating from the turn of the century) is open from noon; please note that the pub toilets are only available during opening hours. A supermarket is less than five minutes’ drive away for grabbing the essentials.

Local attractions

Kendal (known as the southern gateway to the Lake District) is your best bet for activities when the weather isn’t up to much – the town has two castles, a handful of museums, a brewery offering tours, and a leisure centre with a pool. If the outdoors is where you want to be, go waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing or fishing on Lake Windermere with the help of Low Wood Bay Watersports (half an hour's drive), or stay closer by with family-friendly forays around Lakeland Maze Farm Park (five minutes). Craving the coast? Meander across Morecambe Bay beach (30 minutes) in the Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, stopping off enroute at Lakeland Wildlife Oasis (20 minutes) to see the snow leopards as well as more than 100 species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and undersea creatures. Rather admire architecture? Stroll around the stately Sizergh Castle (10 minutes), then check out the lush gardens and mansion of Levens Hall (15 minutes). To top off the trip, a ride on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (half an hour) lets you see some stunning scenery without having to give the legs too much of a workout.

Primitive gravel and cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked: Great spot, staff really friendly. Had a kids play area and a grass area for kids to kick a ball. Toilets that were open when the pub was open and had a chemical disposal point.

Disliked: Unfortunately the drinking water tap wasn't working

Primitive gravel and cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked: Good menu in the Station Inn. Although booking a table is advisable especially at weekends as it gets quite busy. Friendly service and good quality of food. A quiet pitch given that it’s by the side of a main road. Hard standing, gravel pitches. The booking via Pitch Up was seamless and easy.

Disliked: No frills. It is what it is. A car park really with no water, electricity and the outside toilet is away from the pitches. But, the nightly charge reflects that so I have no complaints.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Quiet. Nice views.

Disliked: Expensive considering; there are no toilets (other than when Pub is open), no water taps in field, no washing up facilities, no flat pitches (all of field is on a slope) and you have to carry all your kit from the car park.
