Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Everything! Owners greeted us on arrival and the site was beautiful. Toilets, showers and water facilities were easily within reach and the honesty boxes for firewood and local produce were a lovely touch. Definitely recommend the burgers and lamb chops! Not sure why people keep complaining about the compostable toilets, they were clean and easy to use with no issue. All in all, not a thing to complain about! Even had a camp cat who came to visit every day!

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Large pitches set in a lovely green space with river and lake. The barn facilites are excellent , especially for a loan or light traveller with drying and cooking available.

Disliked: Although the facilities in the main building were great, the lack of hot water and separate hand washing at the compostable toilets could be better.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The site was great. On our way to the site it was signed well, when we arrived we called a lovely woman who greeted us at the gates, guiding us to our plot which was infront of a lovely pond, with its own fire pit and picnic bench ready to use. The lady explained where everything was, compost toilets and electric shower in the area of your plot and a short walk to the barn where there was toilets showers, washing sinks and machine, ping pong and snooker table, boards games, seating, a usable kitchen and honest box shop selling fresh frozen meat and diary and essentials! Absolutely fantasic

Disliked: Gun shot noise going off every 40-60min

From the manager: Hi Sophie Thanks for for your lovely review and I am really pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. Unfortunately, the noise you could hear came from a neighbouring farm. Whilst the newly seeded barley is establishing, the farmer used the noise for a few days to deter the resident pigeons from eating his crop! I can only appologies for this very seasonal disturbance. We hope to welcome you again soon. Jimmy

Local attractions

There's a lot to see and do in the local area without venturing far: Kirkoswald Castle (10 minutes' drive) is well worth a visit, as are Lacy's Caves (15 minutes), a series of five sandstone chambers carved out by an eccentric 18th-century landowner. On a slightly grander scale, there are also ancient sites like Hadrian's Wall (20 minutes) and Birdoswald Roman Fort (35 minutes). If you're Lakeland bound, start off in Pooley Bridge (30 minutes), a pretty little waterside town where you can catch the Ullswater steamer service to gorgeous Glenridding at the other end of the lake. The market town of Keswick (45 minutes) on the shores of Derwentwater is easily accessible too – head here for boat hire, to browse an array of independent shops or to visit the Derwent Pencil Museum and learn about the local graphite industry. If you want to cover varied terrain, you're in the right place: this site is three miles down the road from the Coast to Coast cycle route (join at the bottom of Hartside Pass), and if you fancy dipping dipping your toe in the Yorkshire Dales it's easy to hop on the Settle to Carlisle railway 10 minutes down the road at Lazonby.
