  • Waterside Cumbrian retreat in the rural Eden Valley
  • Three miles from Kirkoswald; 30 minutes' drive to the Lake District
  • All pitches come with a firepit and picnic bench; coarse fishing lake
Established in 2021, High Hall Campsite gives you the opportunity to come and experience everything that makes Cumbria tick. Tucked away under the hills of the North Pennine fells and set deep in the gorgeous Eden Valley, this modern site is an excellent place to arrange a relaxed rural retreat. The grounds here are divided by Croglin Beck, a scenic stream that meanders its way through the middle of the site. There are plenty of waterside views around and the wildlife is abundant: red squirrels, roe deer, barn owls and kingfishers could be among the creatures you spot. There are also farm animals to admire and a well-stocked coarse fishing lake that guests can use free of charge. (Please note that a catch-and-return fishing policy is in place.) This Cumbrian campsite is fairly remote, but it's easy to drop by in Kirkoswald (three miles from base), an Eden Valley village with a hotel, pub, convenience store and ruined castle. High Hall Campsite is located on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding National Beauty. This secluded site would also make a good base for day trips to the Lake District, as the national park is approximately 30 minutes away by road.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Site is a lovely location - although ‘rustic.’ Fire pit was grand.

Disliked: £48 a night for no showers and a composting toilet is taking the mickey. This includes a £12 fee for the Greener Camping Club which is not optional and since this is the most northerly site available pretty much useless to some one based in the highlands.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful peaceful area with fantastic owner! Showers hot (although you’ll need flip flops or similar rather than standing on gravel), compost loos were well maintained. Fire pit and picnic table with every pitch and the pitches were really spaced apart. Plenty of room. Lovely place.

Disliked: Nothing

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We had a great stay at the camp site and greeted by the host on arrival. Amazing family run site with gorgeous views. The picnic bench and a log fire by our tents were a great addition to our stay. Hot showers, clean toilets, and plenty of fire wood provided. We will definitely be returning to this site and telling others about it! We also loved Skip the dog :)

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Loved the size of the plots, the barn, the trees, the stream, the quietness… and not forgetting the electric hook up!

Disliked: My first experience of a composting toilet…. Not a favourite part but they’d clearly been kept clean. Just need to remember your torch because the lights were quite intermittent in there.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Loved the quiet area, felt safe for kids to run around and not in a built up area. Fiona the owner is so pleasant and checks in on everyone to make sure they have everything they need. Little wiggins (dog) was a hit with the kids. Will definitely visit again.

Local attractions

There's a lot to see and do in the local area without venturing far: Kirkoswald Castle (10 minutes' drive) is well worth a visit, as are Lacy's Caves (15 minutes), a series of five sandstone chambers carved out by an eccentric 18th-century landowner. On a slightly grander scale, there are also ancient sites like Hadrian's Wall (20 minutes) and Birdoswald Roman Fort (35 minutes). If you're Lakeland bound, start off in Pooley Bridge (30 minutes), a pretty little waterside town where you can catch the Ullswater steamer service to gorgeous Glenridding at the other end of the lake. The market town of Keswick (45 minutes) on the shores of Derwentwater is easily accessible too – head here for boat hire, to browse an array of independent shops or to visit the Derwent Pencil Museum and learn about the local graphite industry. If you want to cover varied terrain, you're in the right place: this site is three miles down the road from the Coast to Coast cycle route (join at the bottom of Hartside Pass), and if you fancy dipping dipping your toe in the Yorkshire Dales it's easy to hop on the Settle to Carlisle railway 10 minutes down the road at Lazonby.
