  • Friendly park in south Cumbria's Furness peninsula
  • A mile from Ulverston
  • Large play area for kids and a pond
You'll likely like the Furness peninsula in south Cumbria. First up, as its name might imply, it juts into the sea (you probably like sea). And much of it is in the Lake District (you may also like). And it has the island of Walney, and it borders Windermere, and has miles and miles of coastline to dive into – if you've any sense you'll very much like all these things too. And on the peninsula, sheltered within a former quarry, is friendly family-run Bardsea Leisure Park. It's a well-regarded and popular place only a mile from the market town of Ulverston, eight from Windermere and less than four from wild days out at the South Lakes Wild Animal Park. The toilet and shower blocks are roomy and with underfloor heating (you may also like); the site also has a launderette, a washing-up area, a big play area with pond, a dog exercise area, and a large accessory shop and service centre. Wifi is available for an additional charge. And another exemplary thing about Bardsea Leisure Park? It's open all year round for winter beach walks and frosty lakeside hikes – something else you might very much like.

Liked: Liked the look of the place once past all the caravans and actually in the quarry, very well maintained In all aspects, from clean tidy pitches to the heated floors in the shower rooms (really nice touch) for the price you pay. Small park to cater for the kids (2-10/12) with a big sand pit that the baby loved. Staff and food at the cafe was absolutely wonderful I would defiantly recommend with so much on the menu.

Disliked: Unfortunately from the moment we arrived the pich size was too small for our vw WITH our driveaway awning as we was told it couldn't cross the hard standing boundary onto the grass as it will wreck it. (PITCH SPACE WAS STATED ON SITE FOR UNLIMITED) which my parter did confirm on a phone call next morning after booking. Was tild this wont be a problem. This was a huge realisation that we could not stay on these pitches.( also with a 2 year old and a first time for our new puppy). By the time we arrived there was nobody in the office, we spoke to the groundsman who said only thing to do is try and book somewhere else as nobody is here, or I can put you on the front field.(right on a busy main road, didnt feel safe atall). We had no choice that or go home after looking online. As we had drove a few hours after a day's work we decided to stay. The next day we approached the lady on the front desk who just said "we have catered for you" but as the phone rang mid conversation literally just answered it ignorantly and just dealt with the call rather than us. This was a basically we don't care approach, such a massive let down to us but other staff members was really lovely.

Pitch sizes are limited and staff don't care if you have a problem.

Liked: Park and onsite cafe where fantastic. Warden who was on site if a night was lovely also.

Disliked: When booking it states pitch size unlimited ITS NOT!!!. I have a 5m driveaway bell tent so we called the day after booking and let them know as i know some sites do have limits but this stated unlimited, and they said it would be fine. When we arrived the pitch size was not unlimited and only about 5m in total so was nowhere near big enough for even a standard driveaway awning never mind mine. As reception was closed at this point the warden on site said the only thing they could do was put us on the front field on the main road. I wouldn't have booked if I was going to be pitched on a busy main road and was expecting to be staying in the quarry as this was why we booked. The next day we went to speak to reception and alls I got was "well we accommodated you so what's your problem" whilst also answering the phone mid conversation. Be aware pitch sizes are limited very limited and if you have a camper and a driveaway awning you will not fit on a pitch. For someone who travels regularly all over the UK this is the first time I've been met with this problem and reception staff didn't care as we had already paid and refused refund if we chose to leave.

Liked: Great location, very clean and tidy. Great access to shops, pub, leisure centre. Staff very helpful and friendly. We never used the cafe but it looked great. I would recommend this site

Disliked: After 7. 30pm very quiet no people about. The people staying Next door decided to sit behind their caravan for some reason, which meant we had to sit being ignored on our space, Really rude people but that’s not the sites fault. Needs more toilet blocks

Local attractions

A cosy dip first: a swimming pool as well as an indoor/outdoor sports complex is 300 metres from Bardsea Leisure Park. Once refreshed, wander into the handsome market town of Ulverston for old buildings, cobbled streets and the Thursday and Saturday street markets selling fresh local produce. (An indoor market is open weekly too.) A prettily landscaped 18-hole golf course is also in the area, but if you're feeling particularly energetic you might be up for a climb up Hoad Hill and the Sir John Barrow Monument from Ulverston's north east. The tigers, giraffes, kangaroos, lemurs, monkeys and more of the South Lakes Animal Park safari park are towards Barrow-in-Furness, as is the Dock Museum, a free attraction (often with special exhibitions) telling the story of Barrow as a shipbuilding town. Off the peninsula, visit Walney Island and its nature reserve, or Roa Island to get the ferry over to the island of Piel. And if you're off to Windermere, go via the restored steam trains of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway to travel through the Lake District's sterling scenery and board a lake cruise at the end of your journey.
