Camping area looking over towards the fells

  • Spacious family park with spectacular views of Lake District fells
  • Penrith a 20-minute drive and Lake Ullswater within a 30-minute walk
  • Marina, licensed bar with TV and a games room, shop and playground
If you reckon a site with stunning views of the Cumbrian fells sounds like your kind of place, head over to family-friendly Ullswater Holiday Park. Sitting a half-hour walk from the shores of Ullswater (where guests can use Fair Field Marina or spend time canoeing, fishing and riding the famed Ullswater steamers), this option’s in a fab location for touring round the Lake District National Park. Kids can mess about in the half-acre playground at this well-equipped place, while adults have an ale at the licensed bar or a Farrer’s coffee in the café. Wifi is available (around the reception area and bar, not the whole site) and there's also a shop for essentials (including groceries and camping equipment) and a few supermarkets are 20 minutes’ drive away in the nearest town of Penrith. The capital of Cumbria in days of yore, this place has the 14th-century fortress to prove it... If loping from local village to local village seeing structures such as this sounds like an excellent option too, ride one of the Lake Ullswater steamers stopping at settlements such as Pooley Bridge and Glenridding along with the Aira Force falls. After you’ve set eyes on the whooshing water, other attractions nearby include those that combine architecture with lush landscapes – like Dalemain Mansion & Historic Gardens, 10 minutes away, and Lowther Castle & Gardens (20 minutes). There's also the Rheged Centre Cinema, a heritage hub in an old quarry with a grass roof, gallery and 3D screen (15 minutes away). Please note that the games room and bar may not be available in the low season (check in advance for opening hours).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Excellent ground condition. Flat and well drained. Great shower block and outside eating area. Made good use of the microwave and phone charging facilities. Great walks nearby. Magnificent scenery. The fish and chips are welcome after a long walk.

Disliked: Bar not open on Tuesdays but was ok as the excellent bar at the Cove not too far away.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The clean facilities and mother and baby washroom. The bar and games room. Friendly reception staff

Disliked: When booking this weekend me and the other couple in our party tried to book electric pitches (through pitch up) both pages showed no electric hookup pitches. On arrival there were many electric hook up pitches that had no one camped there either of the nights we stayed. Not sure if this is a glitch in the booking system. As even when we check now the electric tent pitches aren’t showing.

Disliked: ÂŁ6.25 fee for anyone visiting you with a car. Too crowded place. Pitches to close to each other. Very commercial place Dogs barking all night. If you looking for a quiet place look for something else

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback, we do charge ÂŁ6.25 for a visitors pass as customers on site who are been visited by people of site, they are parking on site and using all the facilities and we think this is a fare charge. We are a family run holiday park and do have a large campsite and we do have a large range of pitches available, we do make all customers aware that if you are unhappy with the pitch that you have chosen, we are always happy to move you to an alternative pitch. We are not a commercial site; we are a family park, and we would like to stay that way. We do have a noise policy, this is no noise after 11 o'clock this includes animals, if you are on-site and having any issues with noise you are always welcome to pop into reception and we will try and resolve the issue.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site was everything we could have hoped for for our first camping adventure with clean toilets and showers, bins and a tap close by, a shop with everything you could need if you’d forgotten something, we ventured to the chippy on our second night and due to the rain even passed it through to the bar for us, where we spent the evening chatting to the lovely couple that ran it moving into the games roll for a few rounds of pool. Close enough for great hikes and only a 20 minute drive to Keswick where we spent our Sunday afternoon. Excellent site would highly recommend.

FHU gravel travel trailer campsite (large, twin axle)

Liked: I really liked the site and the staff were lovelly! We did have one issue but it was resolved and you cant ask for more! nice play park and the on site shop prices were very reasonable to our surprise. Lovell.y area with lots to do and some stunning scenery.

Disliked: Our pitch flooded in the rain, and this was a few inches thick with water. our awning mats floated, our table / cupboard was ruined as the water soaked into the bottom and our shoes were flooded out. someone on site ( apparenlty living on site) said they had that problem right at the start of the season and it had not been rectified. The staff did allow us to move pitch and we picked one we knew didnt flood. It was a nightmare moving mid holiday but the staff were great about it and helped us to resolve this.

Local attractions

The Lake District doesn’t skimp on swish sights and attractions, and many of the best things to see and do in the national park – from bushcraft and watersports to golf and tennis – are within easy driving distance of the site. For classic Cumbrian walks Hallin Fell is a 20-minute drive away and the market town of Keswick, where you can go from perusing a pencil museum to dancing around the megalithic Castlerigg Stone Circle, is reachable in 25 minutes. A bit south of the town of Penrith (20 minutes) are the prehistoric Mayburgh Henge and Norman Brougham Castle. Other well-known Lake District settlements are also within easy reach along winding roads, like to Windermere (45 minutes away) and Ambleside (50 minutes). And if you fancy a crack at cantering instead of sitting in the car? Horse riding can be had from stables within a 15-minute drive, while guests who prefer roving on a revving vehicle can squat upon a quad bike and set off into the local lands (25 minutes from the park).
