  • Luxury glamping pods at a Cumbria farm a mile from Kirkby Stephen
  • On the edge of Yorkshire Dales National Park for outdoor activities
  • Farm shop and café on site; private hot tub and firepit for each pod
Good long country walk, pint of something in the pub, then back to your accommodation for a soak in the hot tub and a barbecue dinner… now, doesn't that sound like a pretty excellent way to spend a day or few? If you fancy a bit of that on your Cumbria break, book yourselves in to one of the pods at Sandwath Farm, just under a mile from Kirkby Stephen. On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and North Pennines National Landscape, this place makes a fabulous base for walks, bike rides and other outdoor activities, followed by a drink or meal from one of the town's pubs, cafés, restaurants or takeaways. The town also has shops including a small supermarket and a butcher, and there’s a farm shop on site. All of these are very handy to know about, as you may well prefer to pick up supplies and head back to your pod for an evening cooking on the barbecue or having a couple of drinks by your firepit. And of course you’ll need to leave some time for a soothing soak in your private hot tub, too… Inside your pod, everything is just as lovely – each one has a double bed, an ensuite bathroom and a mini kitchen, plus heating to keep everything cosy. Bedding and towels are provided to help keep your packing list nice and short. Kitchen utensils are included too – but if you don't fancy cooking you can also stroll over to the farm shop, which has a café menu including things like breakfasts, lunches and sweet treats.

Local attractions

There’s loads of tasty food on site, so you’ll need to work up an appetite – and that should be easily done with all the great walks and bike rides nearby. Some top picks are the Poetry Path along the River Eden, an old railway line walk at Smardale Gill Nature Reserve (five minutes’ drive) and the trail around the stone cairns at Nine Standards Rigg (15 minutes). There are plenty of bike rides too, plus a golf course in Ravenstonedale (10 minutes) and fishing in the River Eden or Bessy Beck. The Eden Valley Railway (10 minutes) runs heritage services, and the scenic Settle-Carlisle line passes close by as well. Heading south, you’ll quickly be in the Yorkshire Dales National Park – perhaps for walks at Cotter Force or Hardraw Force waterfalls (both half an hour). Throw in a bit of local history with trips to places like medieval Brough Castle (10 minutes) or Pendragon Castle (15 minutes) – the latter linked with Arthurian legends.
