What a view to wake up to. Gorgeous and so peaceful. (added by visitor 14 Jun 2021)
Pitched up next to the creek
Spacious, flat pitch site
Gorgeous rural views

  • Quiet rural site on a working farm in the Lake District National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Kendal; 25 minutes from Windermere
  • Back to basics riverside pitches with easy access from A6
Whether it’s Lake District walks, spying on dark skies at night or cooking over the barbecue, High Borrow Bridge Camping Site will welcome you nicely into the Cumbria countryside. This quiet site is in a handy spot close to the A6 and 20 minutes’ drive north of Kendal, within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park… Naturally, that means that there are lots of lovely walks to be had all around, and some splendid views from the pitches too. That’s especially true if you wander down to the banks of the Crookdale Beck river (for a paddle, if you’re feeling brave). It’s likely that you’ll spend much of your time here out exploring the Lakes, but it’s also possible to get out into the Yorkshire Dales if you fancy tackling a second national park. Pitches here are part of a working farm with sheep on site; dogs are allowed but just be aware that you’ll need to keep them under control and on leads at all times so they don’t get into any scrapes with their woolly neighbours. There's plenty of space, but please note that access means this site isn't suitable for motorhomes. There are a couple of pubs about 15 minutes’ drive away from the site for those who’d like to eat out. If you’d rather simply crash out on site with a few drinks and snacks, you’re welcome to light up a barbecue or start a campfire (in firepits only, ta) to keep you toasty as dusk falls. Facilities on site have been kept simple, with just a toilet block that has individual cubicles and hand sanitising stations nearby to keep everyone clean. Please note there are no showers on site (the nearest are at Tebay Services, 20 minutes away by road) and there's no running drinking water so you'll want to bring bottles along; there are also no bins so all guests will need to take rubbish away with them. It's also a good idea to bring along some midge repellent for a stay at this site… During very wet weather, the site will happily relocate you to a different field away from the river.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: We liked the Location, the ground was clear and flat. It was very clean with a lovely little stream running through.

Disliked: Our only issue was the toilets. They were not working on arrival however the owners were straight out when alerted. What didn’t change however was the smell, it was overwhelming, I know we are close to the end of the season but it made it almost impossible to use them.

From the manager: I'm sorry for your concerns over the toilets, they are emptied regularly by a loo company.

Liked: Beautiful area, loved waking up to the sound of sheep in the mornings. Peaceful, good amount of space. Can park the car close enough to the tent to make multiple trips when setting up and packing away.

Disliked: The toilets. Clean but smelly.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Gorgeous little site, we camped right by the stream. Peaceful area - everyone there was friendly. A few parking spaces but some room elsewhere if busy too. There is a shop about 10 minutes away by car.

Disliked: The toilets had a smell too them, but were clean. It was wet and rainy during our stay - yet everyone kept the toilet block clean and dry. Just the smell that was unpleasant.

Liked: Beautiful campsite. Exactly as described. Issues with where the maps took me but contact the owner who was really helpful. Would definitely recommend this site to others. Really enjoyed my stay here.

Disliked: Water in the toilets stopped for a VERY brief moment. This was sorted pretty much instantly though. Also as said, Apple Maps took me to a completely different location using the post code but as above, owner was contacted and more than helpful.

Liked: Lovely campsite, we came with our 5 year old son and dog. It was mine and our sons first time camping and it was a lovely experience. There was a little stream running through the campsite. Toilets were clean. Beautiful scenery and close to windamere where we went paddle boarding 💖

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Brilliant campsite. The owners are just lovely! The lady and her little daughter looked after me when I was lost and expressed deep concern. You can peacefully take in the scenery and talk to the sheep while they stare at you! There is a lovely stream to get water, if you have a filter , and it's so refreshing after a good cycle ride. This is a backpacker, bike packer(like me!) and adventurer's dream. From Kendal it's a challenging, up-hill ride for 7 miles on the A6 with your gear. However, no problem with just the bike. Back to Kendal it's just freewheeling!

Route directions

The site owners recommend that you use these instructions and Google Maps rather than Apple Maps. On the A6 look out for Kendal Caravans, turning left just after it if coming from the south (or turning right just before if coming from the north). Go up the lane and cross the cattle grid – don't turn left through the wooden gate but go over the hill to the bottom. The site will be on your right.
