  • Quiet, peaceful rural site with stunning views over Eskdale Valley
  • A 10-minute drive to Wast Water; 25 minutes to Scafell Pike
  • Pick your own pitch; pub 10 minutes' walk away
Fancy a trip to England’s deepest lake? Perhaps a scramble up the country’s highest mountain? Both of these (Wast Water and Scafell Pike, of course) are within easy reach of The Barn Campsite, as are plenty of other top spots including Coniston Water, the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway and the Cumbria coastline. From this Lake District site between Eskdale and Holmrook there are some fine views to be had out over the Eskdale Valley and plenty of space from which to enjoy them. It’s a pitch-free setup here, so you can simply take a wander around and pick the spot that suits you best. Portaloos, two toilets, rubbish bins and three drinking water stations are provided for guests’ use. Raised firepits are allowed on site; along with firewood, the firepits are available from the site at an extra cost. (and in general you’re asked to be considerate and respect the countryside) This is a properly green and rural location (as you’ll spot from the accompanying pics) but it’s not devoid of local amenities – it’s a 10-minute walk to a local pub for some great food and real ales. A little further along the road (a mile and a bit away) is a village store, and there’s a small supermarket about five minutes’ drive away in Holmrook (which also has a pub and some great salmon fishing on the River Irt).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Showers are “hot enough to take the enamel off your teeth” Flushing toilets with toilet roll was very nice

Disliked: Only bad thing is the bottom of the field goes under water with rain but that obviously can’t be helped

Liked: We absolutely loved our stay here. WiFi, Firepits, somewhere to charge your phone. Even somewhere to dry towers etc! Everything has been thought of. Johnty (the owner) was very informative. Talked up through the camp and area. Recommend a few places for us to visit. Grass well kept. Very peaceful and quiet. We will be visiting again! Highly recommend

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Owner was incredibly welcoming, friendly and helpful. Gave very good local information about amenities, food places and interesting spots to go. The campsite had everything you needed, charging points, showers, washing up places and a place to dry clothes. Had all you needed without feeling commercial. A cosy little spot hidden in the hills. The neighbouring sheep were friendly as well!!

Disliked: Absolutely nothing

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Jonty, what an amazing man. Always goes out of his way to make sure everything is perfect for your stay! Field is flat and well kept, toilets and showers clean and well maintained, free fire pits, free drying room and not too far from a decent pub! 100% will be returning, this is a good base to tick off some wainwrights!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Location close to Scafell and Wast water, also having a local pub down the road. The site toilets and showers were better than advertised. Charging points Friendly owner, who was often walking around.

Disliked: Offered WiFi but was poor so wouldn’t include as a selling point. Over crowded. Unfortunately the owner closely packed groups together so you were within a meter of others tents and could hear the every conversation. Cars are parked alongside each tent pitch. One group had loud music playing all evening. Another group left early doors with cars reving, doors being slammed, loud conversations from 5am so little sleep was had. Shame the pictures make it look well spaced out, I wouldn’t go back due to the experience. We go camping and chose the site to enjoy countryside and quiet. The owner with his friendliness was almost egging on the heavy drinking, music of groups.

Local attractions

Get set to see some of the Lake District’s most famed sights on outings from The Barn – it will take you about 10 minutes to drive to Wast Water, 20 minutes to the dramatic cascades of Stanley Ghyll waterfall or 40 minutes to Coniston Water for boat trips and sailing courses. If you’d like a little more of an uphill challenge, scramble up Sca Fell (15 minutes’ drive) or the slightly taller Scafell Pike (25 minutes). Alternatively, for a much gentler day out, sign up for llama or alpaca trekking at The Woolly Farm (five minutes). There’s plenty of heritage around here too: perhaps you’d like to mooch around Muncaster Castle (10 minutes) to see the haunted castle and hawk centre, or visit the atmospheric ruins of Egremont Castle (20 minutes). A ride on the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway (10 minutes) is a good way to mix up a bit of scenery and a sense of past times. Looking out towards the coast instead, you may like to head to the seaside at Seascale (15 minutes), where there’s a beach and a golf course.
