  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Powered gravel campervan campsite

Liked: Peaceful surroundings, good facilities, friendly staff.

Disliked: Wouldn't want to try and drive a caravan to the site! Lanes a bit twisty if you come in from the Barrow side. Come in through Witherslack from Kendal side.

Primitive grass tent campsite (medium)

Liked: Receptionist was charming and the view was lovely if you blocked out the yurts with hot tubs. The water was hot.

Disliked: The pitch was dank, damp and rocky and not suitable for tents. We left a day early as we felt ill.

Lodge (hot tub)

Liked: The site location was good, the shop was handy and the lady working in it was friendly. We really enjoyed the pizza from the van on the Wednesday. The cabin was up at the top of the site which made it fairly private.

Disliked: Myself and my 8 yr old son stayed in a lodge with a hot tub. It’s a great concept but some key things let it down. 1. The floors of the decking and kitchen were really dirty when we arrived. Food dirt, kebab sticks, hair. I spent an hour sweeping it with a small brush when we arrived. 2. The mattress was really uncomfortable. You could feel all of the springs in. 3. The land behind the hot tub wasn’t very well kept. A bin bag was hanging from a branch in the tree. Part of the privacy screen had fallen down and not been replaced so you could see it all. 4.No step up to the hot tub made it difficult to navigate. We only received one pack of wood for it despite being there for 5 nights. Nobody checked it so we didn’t use it after the first two days as I know how bacteria can breed in them and we had no way of knowing if the water was safe. 5. The site was peaceful all week but on our last night it was chaos. 3 families arrived and put up football nets on unoccupied pitches. The boys were booting the ball for hours in the evening and it was going into peoples tents. I’d kept my 8 yr old quiet all week and was really miffed about this. On the same night cars were up and down until past 9pm despite the rules clearly stating no cars past 8pm. I’d stuck to this throughout our stay so this was frustrating. One van was blaring out music into the evening. I saw a staff member walk past but they didn’t say anything. They must have woken the baby next to them as they’d already packed down at 6am when I got up. They didn’t look happy. 6. The showers are warm but the block really needs updating. Manky floors in the showers and next to the toilet cubicles without any wall. Cubicles are also tiny, making it hard to shower a child or to get changed. 6. The cabin and the outdoor kitchen weren’t very clean. Lots of cobwebs and dust. I had to scrub the kitchen sides and there were dead flies in the containers for cutlery. The crockery needed a good wash. The shelves were greasy and needed a wipe. Nothing major but you’d expect them to be clean on arrival. 7. When full, the pitches are really close together.

Power optional grass tent or campervan campsite (large)

Liked: Friendly staff, hot water and showers, washing up facilities. Onsite pizza van. quiet after 10:30pm

Disliked: pitches were very close together. Our neighbours tent was a meter away from ours. This made noise (snoring from others) disturbing at night. I ended up having to sleep with my earbuds in.

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
