Lovely quiet site after a group left

  • Secluded and peaceful base from which to explore the western lakes
  • Hot showers and hairdryers available on site
  • Dogs welcome and barbecues allowed
Off to the western lakes but want to wander lonely as a cloud instead of being there jam-packed in crowds? Have a look at Whinfell Farm Camp Site: it's secluded, medium sized and in a winning position for scouting around Cockermouth, Buttermere and the highlights of the western Lake District. Such scenic surrounds require no complex facilities and entertainments, so amenities have been kept simple but with thoughtful extra touches including hot showers and hairdryers. The washing-up room has been kitted out with a freezer and laundry facilities to ensure it's easy to keep the tribe fed and cleaned up… and well-behaved dogs are welcome to join the jaunt to the Lakes as long as they're kept on leads while on site. Whinfell also allows barbecues (not campfires, firepits or anything of that ilk, please): just remember to keep them off the ground to prevent damage to the turf. If you want to eat out, it's a leisurely 10-minute trot to the 17th-century Wheatsheaf Inn for top-notch meals as well as a tempting range of local ales; best to book before you set out, as such a setup is unsurprisingly rather popular. A decent night's sleep being a vital ingredient of a happy stay for many folk, the owners request that all guests pipe down after 10.30pm to ensure peaceful slumbers all round.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: There were hot showers and that’s the only good thing about this campsite.

Disliked: Stayed here with my partner and 2 year old. On arrival there were signs stating we could not pitch up until the number was called. The number didn’t work, I sent a few texts and no response. We decided to pick a pitch as it was getting dark. It was an absolute shambles and free for all. With this campsite being unmanned, people were pulling up at early hours then driving off again, rules stating campers to be quiet after 10:30 (the norm) however this was not the case. Parties, loud music, fires and all sorts going on until 3/4am. The electric hook ups don’t work either! The toilets are disgusting, muddy, wet and a slip hazard. The bins are overflowing everywhere on camp. It stinks. It states on the description that they added hairdryers to the toilets for leisure. There’s ONE hair dryer in the whole place. This site is an absolute shite hole I wouldn’t bring my blind dog here. Do not book this place unless you want an unhappy, overpriced stay in the middle of no where. You can’t even see the views it states on the website. Never again!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Close proximity to the fells. Friendly local pub.

Disliked: Unimpressed with the facilities - the toilet block stank and recycling was overflowing! Unlike most campsites there was nowhere to charge a phone, although there was a note stating it could be done for a charge! (which given the cost of the campsite per night I thought was quite obnoxious). Stayed 2 nights and the first was pretty quiet. However on the second night lots of new campers showed up and were squabbling about pitches with no one on site to keep order. Despite there being a stated quiet time this was ignored by some with music playing past midnight.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Liked the the beautiful surroundings. The hot showers. Peaceful haven.

Disliked: The toilets were disgusting most of the time which during this muddy and wet period could have done with extra cleaning. The bins were constantly overflowing in our 4 days there. We never saw any staff the whole time we were there. Pitches not level but to be expected where it’s located.

Liked: Didn't get to camp due to the weather unfortunately. We arrived and called the number to be told we can try and find an electric pitch as that's what was booked, but that most were taken and some were broken. Told to avoid certain areas due to wet areas. Left and travelled to North Wales.

Liked: Location

Disliked: I booked this campsite for a week, and I can confidently say I will never return. The toilets and facilities are covered in mold and filth absolutely disgusting. The bins are overflowing and haven’t been emptied. There are no designated pitches; you just call a number and find your own spot. It’s supposed to be quiet after 10:30 pm, but there was constant noise with people partying and talking well into the night (past 11:30pm)

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: I don't know how this was awarded last year by pitch up ! The access was full of pot holes , not friendly feeling on phone and you felt like the toilets/showers had literally just had the cows in which is what it was just a old cow barn they were very dirty mold and fallen to bits no chemical area which I can understand being on a farm not recommend for children! All they need to do is wash the toilets out and paint de mould and replacing a lot of tiles in the showers don't put tent on a low slopes as you will get flooded

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Location was perfect, only 6 miles from Buttermere. The village pub was great and served lovely food. The views from the campsite were stunning and pitch was a good size.

Disliked: Facilities need some care and attention. The toilets and showers are basic and not very clean, lots of cobwebs, also nothing to dry your hands on so take a towel. The bin store is full of rubbish and doesn't look like it has been emptied in a while.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Nothing really to like as it is very basic

Disliked: On arrival there was no one to speak to so had to ring them to find out where i could pitch up. As i had only booked none electric i asked on arrival if i could upgrade to electric hook up and was told that there wasn't any available but when i was going in and out i noticed that there was plenty of pitches with electric empty also the toilets and showers where very dated and could do with a very good clean.

Liked: Small fields so felt not on a larger campsite, easy check-in, (ring the owner he advises where to pitch) generally you can choose your own, there are electric hook up pitches and the 4G signal is good here (no wifi). Quiet time from 10.30pm which seemed to be adhered to.

Disliked: Large bins overflowing (I noticed this was a comment on a review a few weeks prior) 2 toilets and 2 showers for each M male and female, in great need of some freshening up, but all functioning. No noise restrictions in the morning, I was woken by music a few times from another field at 5.45am, they definitely need to address the quiet time rules (other campsites have strict quiet times between 10.30pm and 7am and zero music)

Local attractions

Buttermere and Loweswater are the nearest lakes to Whinfell Farm Camp Site, each with accompanying villages and circular lakeside walks. Loweswater is managed by the National Trust and has rowing boats available for hire. On land, the western lakes area is as full of things to do as its more central counterparts, with activities such as golfing, cycling, shoreline horse rides and hiking around the Roman heritage, valleys and peaks of Eskdale, Wasdale and the coastal village of Ravenglass. Also take time for an afternoon or day among the mountain bike trails and forest walks of Whinlatter, named by the Forestry Commission as England's only true mountain forest. It's one of the Super 6 mountain bike trails and has the longest purpose-built MTB track in the whole Lake District; find out more in the Whinlatter Forestry Centre. Keswick's Honister Slate Mine is the last working slate mine in England and is open to visitors who come for one of the several tours and to climb to the top of the mountain using the original miners' path. And if it's sea you want to see, the Cumbrian coastline at Allonby is about 12 miles away.
