  • Modern and accessible holiday park on the Solway coast, near the M6
  • A half-hour drive to Carlisle or the Lake District National Park
  • Bistro, bar, well-equipped gym and tuck shop on site; dogs welcome
Coast, countryside and city time are all easily accessible from Bowness on Solway Camping and Glamping… and this Cumbria park is also just a short way from the M6 and the England/Scotland border, making it a handy spot for a stopover on long journeys north or south too. This smart modern complex (part of the Hunter Leisure Group) is within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about 20 minutes’ drive from Wigton. The location is an excellent one for days out along this quiet stretch of coast, visits to the city of Carlisle or time spent exploring the northern stretches of the Lake District National Park. Facilities at this park have been particularly well thought out… there’s a well-equipped gym that guests can use for an extra charge, and a bistro and bar where you can undo all the good work you’ve just done. If you don’t need a full meal, steer instead to the tuck shop to pick up ice creams, soft drinks, slushies and alcoholic drinks. Everything has been set up to be accommodating to as wide a range of guests as possible – facilities are accessible for less mobile guests, and those travelling with dogs are welcome (they even sell doggie ice cream in the shop…)

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: So quiet and glorious starry skies. Bistro and bar was great. Staff are lovely, there just needs to be at least 2 more of them. Showers are powerful and hot. The lasagne is first class.

Disliked: So the idea and design is great, however the implementation is lacking. Just needs finishing off and attention giving to the details; is it a camp site or a building site? The attention to detail is not there- beautiful flowers around the pitches intermingled with nettles and docks, weeds in between the cobbles of the pitches, pitches need to be wider (why does it specify 5m x 6m on the website for hard stabding pitches??There are no motorhomes of those dimensions!!), kids running on the gravel from 6am is noisy, doors don't fit shower cubicles, bins over flowing, huge step out of the shower block, huge last step up to the games room in the bar, holes around the spotlights in shower room, nowhere dry to dry yourself out of the shower, construction equipment within metres of the pitches, shower block code scribbled on a scrap of paper, poorly signed off the road, no reception to check in, dear for what it is, staff run off their feet, food was super but the wait was not, website makes it look a lot more salubrious than it is. It feels like they opened it for guests before it was finished but then on asking, we were told it has been open 10 years! Don't be put off, just have a moment to think that the website is very well marketed.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The campsite was in an ideal position for the start of the Hadrian's wall walk and had all the amenities needed, including toilets, showers, bar and cafe. We had a lovely breakfast before setting off and the staff were lovely and very helpful, one member of staff even took the trouble to walk us to the start of the walk and take some photographs for us. Would definitely recommend.

Disliked: Nothing but would say that there is not a lot in the area if you require a lot of local amenities and would check the closing times of the nearby pub

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Parking was included in pitch price. Washing facilities.

Disliked: Site not as advertised. Actually in a field next to a cemetery. All "facilities" are dotted over a larger area. Photos are not of the toilet and shower blocks, these are mis-represented. Showers flooded, no hand soap, mens toilet next to chemical waste disposal so stunk. Poor fitting doors so privacy compromised. Wasn't given the code on arrival and had to ask other campers for details. No reception so you are lost (both through location and what to do) on arrival. No menu on a Sunday in bar/restaurant. Looks pretty but service is to be desired - 35 minutes for onion rings! No organisation of pitches, or space to pitch. Noisy site with no respect for camping etiquette (space/quiet hours/dogs on leads). Messy construction, with place looking like a building site. Overflowing bins. Poor signage. Nearest shop 10 miles away as isn't one on site as advertised. No wifi, no access to gym - all advertised but not possible. Left a day early!

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass RV campsite

Liked: Excellent little site Great food with easy access to the beach.Staff could not have been more helpful Shaun was brilliant always there to help, the only thing I would change is make pitches 1-3 for large campervans and pitches 4&5 for T4 size vehicles would definitely be returning as it's a little gem

Local attractions

If it’s the wilder side of the coast that attracts you, take your binoculars along to see what you can spot at RSPB Campfield Marsh nature reserve (five minutes’ drive). More of a sandy stroll and paddling type? Aim for beaches in Allonby or Silloth (both half an hour), both long sandy beaches with good waves for watersports action. To see some bigger animals, head off for hands-on sessions at Walby Farm Park (half an hour) or get to know gibbons, zebra and snakes at the Lake District Wildlife Park (40 minutes). If history's more your thing, a day out in Carlisle (half an hour) should provide plenty of fodder in the form of the castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum. If you’ve not got kids in your party, tours and tastings at The Lakes Distillery (35 minutes) and Annandale Distillery (45 minutes) might be on the cards. Or how about surprising the folk back home by coming back with a little something from Gretna Green (half an hour), that well-known elopement destination?
