Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Great location. Easy to find and get to. Camping area not right by the lake but easy access to it via footpath. Great views Staff very friendly

Disliked: Advertise hot showers but water temperature wasn’t really hot. It was quite busy so maybe we just ran out of hot water

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The views were really nice of the Lake

Disliked: Toilets and showers were disgusting. Only had stair access and nowhere to actually change in the showers. Shower curtains were dirty. Toilets were awful not cleaned in the 3 days we were there. The worst camp facilities I have seen. No staff on site so people were being noisy and playing music really loud. Dogs roaming freely which resulted in dog poo in the field.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Location - the site is right on Windermere and you can walk right to the lake Relaxed - you can pick your own pitch and there is no 24/7 warden or staff on site The horsebox - a little horsebox selling drinks, sweets, hiring fire pits, etc The barn - has table and chairs, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, and ping pong table and seemed popular with a lot of campers for socialising. There was also a corner for unwanted camping gear that other campers could use if needed. Very little light pollution so gorgeous night skies, when not cloudy!

Disliked: Toilets - we visited last year and the toilets were cleaned and restocked morning and evening however this year the morning visit seemed to have stopped, meaning the toilets got very muddy, especially with Storm Lilian, and the loo roll ran out overnight or by early morning. Relaxed - there is nothing to ensure rules are adhered to, so dogs are off lead and running around and groups are playing music and/or talking loudly all night. Price - overpriced for the facilities, which are two shipping containers with 3 toilet and 3 small shower cubicles. There are three sinks under a small shelter with hot/cold water for washing up; I'm 5'10 and found them a bit low. Highly recommend visitors bring their own trolley or similar. The site does not allow cars onto the camping field and provide 3 wheelbarrows to cart stuff, which is not enough for how busy the site is and people tend to hoard them.s

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Everything about the location was excellent for us and facilities were ok

Disliked: Water tasted metallic, device charging room was just an old cow shed with an 4 plug extension lead. Horse Box not opening on a morning is a shame

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Really lovely area, just a short walk through field and you are on the lake with some lovely walks. The horse box that sells coffee, snacks, logs is a great touch. No cars allowed on the field which is fab as it looks so much better, wheelbarrows are provided to carry camping gear. Great communication and allowed me to change booking details to arrive/leave a day earlier.

Disliked: Shame really as the facility’s take away from the loveliness of the place. Showers were just awkward as there is no where to put clothes & no room to get dry or changed so you literally step out into the toilet walk way .. had to walk back to tent in just a towel. The bins were massively over flowing & the washing up area was just full of old greasy sponges & just not very nice. Loads of random bits of old tents, ect just discarded in a barn. I understand that it’s people that ruin it for others by not clearing up but for £50 a night it just felt like it was a free for all and the campsite just did bare minimal to help. Would return to the area but not this campsite.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful surroundings Tranquil quiet campsite Great access to lake Friendly staff

Disliked: Hub is not a large gazebo as advertised but a concrete part of barn. Very small amount of charging facilities. Toilets accessed by slippery metal steps No toilet roll in the mornings Not a fussy person but having to barrow items from car park to tent in wind and rain was very stressful

Local attractions

As the largest lake in the national park, Windermere is skirted by a good range of attractions, with something here to suit a variety of tastes. For a peaceful retreat, spend a few hours exploring the 30 acres of gardens at Brockhole (30 minutes' drive), or take the kids to Hill Top (10 minutes) to visit the former home of much-loved children's author and illustrator Beatrix Potter. For boat trips, you'll be a 10-minute drive from the handy Windermere ferry that connects the eastern side of the water to the west, or you could head to the Steam Yacht Gondola at the northern tip of Coniston Water (25 minutes) for a stylish jaunts aboard a well-restored Victorian vessel that was first launched way back in in 1859. A network of lovely lakeside footpaths is accessible directly from site, but for something more challenging try a hike up the Old Man of Coniston (25 minutes). There’s also the option of embarking on the difficult but very scenic Struggle Trail from Ambleside (20 minutes) before calling in for a well-deserved pint at the Kirkstone Inn.
